The pneumonia-cases seem to require intubation and this causes 2ndary infections, requiring antibiotics etc.
They would qualify for ICU here - except that we don't have space in ICU for a lot patients. Nobody has.
My mum had pneumonia and was on a ward, not in ICU. My mother-outlaw had pneumonia last April. She was 89 at the time and vulnerable to a secondary infection. OH flew over to visit her, and on her doctor's advice, he arranged for a private ambulance to take her home along with a machine that administers antibiotics and oxygen through a mask, something similar to this...

The doc was 34. Just sayin'...
Yes, and the first fatality outside if China was aged 44! This is what makes it so difficult to judge what the actual situation is. 42 cases on a cruise ship docked off Yokohama and Shenzhen also now on lockdown. So, who is concerned, and who thinks it’s just hysteria?

Re: Coronavirus

It seems that a lot of cases on these cruise-ships are among staff.

Wouldn't be surprised if they ended up with hundreds of cases on that ship.

That's what the Chinese mean when they say "interesting times".

It is difficult to judge when we are so remote from the facts so have no clue what actually happened.
Myself, I try to avoid going into hospital while I have several friends who died in hospital after catching superbugs that were medically entirely unrelated to their simple operations.

Good question. In times like this it's always fair to ask oneself what the media second intentions are. There seems to be a fair number of reasons to be concerned. No reasons for hysteria, though.

I'd say cautious.
I don't like hysteria or drama. As you may have noticed, I crave cold, hard facts. 'Knowledge is power' and all that... When information is being noticably withheld, manipulated, edited, massaged, etc, I'm cautious as to the reasons for such behaviour.

Same.
My mum was already diabetic and being treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma when she went into hospital with pneumonia. Then she contracted C. Difficile precisely because the antibiotics to treat the pneumonia wiped out the good bacteria as well as the bad, and it was game over.

Who, surgical mask salesmen?

China's markets tanked 8% when trading opened on Monday.

Re: Coronavirus

My OH tells me that his colleague in Singapore came in sick to work today - and as there was one confirmed case of coronavirus in his condo, he was sent home immediately.

This disease is spreading - probably because of the long incubation period. Many have no idea they are sick until 10 days later. This colleague could be psychosomatic (given he knew there was one confirmed case in his condo) but still - not good!

Singapore just went to health crisis "orange" which is the same level they went to with the outbreak of SARS.

This will disrupt a lot of supply chains in the coming weeks.

Be prepared for everything, to get more pricey and some things just not being available.

Don't assume only gadgets are affected.

Medicines, equipment, food, raw materials needed for heating could all come from China and without them it's not so good news for the West.

One good thing that could come from this is if the West decides to stop building everything there and bring something back home. Even if 10% of supply chains return home it'd fantastic. Trump is not crazy at arm wrestling China, they have become too powerful.

"Could", but do they actually?
Realistically, what do you have in your home, or consume on a regular basis, that comes from China?

Many moons ago, someone told me that I'd be screwed without American products in my home, so I did a check and can honestly say that I didn't have a single Amercian product, which did surprise me.

Thermostats and valves for the heating system. And a whole lot more like almost all electrical equipement like telly, laptops, phones. Than there is toys, cloths and such for the little one but none of that is in any way essential.

But rephrase the question.

What do you have in your home which is produced/manufactered in Europe of which the producing companies are reliant on China for raw materials or parts for either their product or parts for their production lines. And that is tbh a huge truckload.
