My local coop was completely out of fresh produce this morning---baked everything else looked normal (although I didn't do an inventory, just got my energy drink and gipfelli and left).

I'm not too concerned, we're stocked up on the essentials enough to last at least a month if not longer.

Keep in mind that it is Monday morning and the shops will most likely not have received supplies since Friday... Also since people are now working from home, there are a lot more people to feed at home...

We know for a fact that the country has stocks of most essentials to cover the population for 3 to 6 months.

It is just going to take some time to get into the swing of things.

people are still going to work that could be done from home, any news on that?
No idea about any regulation. But we've noticed less people coming into the Markthalle this morning for coffee and gipfelis. We'll see how lunchtime is.

Re: Coronavirus

Good morning.

I just arrived to the office. This home office thing is more challenging that it seems. Drinking coffee on the balcony on this beautiful spring day took much longer than expected

In more serious terms, I have not found a thread on kurzarbeit/reduction horaire de travail (chômage partiel) due to the virus. This topic is important to everyone without the opportunity to do home office and people with fixed-term or temporary contracts . Should I create one?

There will be shortages for fresh fruits, vegetables, everything we normally import from Italy, Spain etc. And a lot of other places too. You'll realise how important these countries are. Ha.
So those plants suddenly stop growing? Or do the Spanish suddenly eat 3 times as much? Did trucks run out of fuel?

Food production and supply chain had not been effected yet and at this moment there is no reason to assume it will. Stop shedding nonsense that upsets people.

Hopefully the peak of panic buying will end soon and people will be able to see the shelves being replenished. If it were just me to worry about I wouldn't be concerned at all. A bag of rice, beans, honey, salt and some other basics and I can hunker down for months but when you have two kids to worry about, thats when sh*t gets scary.

No panic though

As I predicted, a hospital has decided to ask it's crossborder personnel to reside nearby temporarily. Clearly they're spooked by the French defence council going on at the moment.

Yep, my opinion also. The muppets will be done by tomorrow, maybe some will bring forward next weekends shopping to Thurs or Friday.
As Jim said, they've had a big weekend, need to get those trucks moving.

Serious question, I know the restaurants are likely to close.
What about the take aways? Like pizza, Indian etc etc.

Geneva is the latest canton to announce it is going into special measures.
As from 6pm this evening all non essential commerce will be closed.

That makes six cantons so far : Tessin, Jura, Neuchâtel, Basel-Land, Grisons and Geneva.

Takeaways are allowed to remain open and restaurants are allowed to offer a takeaway service. Just no eating allowed on the premises.
At least that’s the case here in Neuchâtel.

Supermarket was pretty much fully stocked as normal here this morning according to hubby, the centre had a weird vibe though as all the other stores other than the pharmacy, pet store and newsagent were closed.

The bakeries in BL were open this morning, and they're kind of a takeaway. If our local pizzerie continues to do takeaway, we'll be using them more than usual. Also the roast chicken guy.

You can add Valais to that list.

Also Parliament has suspended it's Spring session, to give the right example to all the naughty people who went out on walks and enjoyed themselves and kissed or shook hands with each other over the weekend.

Just had a call from a Swiss friend. The govt. are meeting at 12 to discuss closing all bars, clubs and restaurants throughout the country. She expects it to go ahead, probably from tomorrow.

Re panic buying, my cheese shop is almost sold out of cheese (I wasn't expecting that!), Friday and Saturday were crazy busy. The other big sellers have been Gin and Port
Thank you for the head's up! Has there been any word yet regarding the outcome of the government's meeting today at noon? (I see that it's only 12:59 right now, so maybe still too early).
