Re: Coronavirus

The Cambridge English Examinations Center in Bern has closed its door permanently.

https://cambridgeenglish-bern.ch/de/

I can imagine we'll increasingly see businesses which already have financial difficulties succumb to bankruptcy.

That will go hand in hand with Pornhub Premium now free worldwide.
If pr0nhub goes down it'll be a disaster for those in confinement ..

Oh wow!
My son did his advanced exams on the 13 and 14th of March so I guess he was amongst the last candidates to take an exam there.
I assume they will provide the results for these exams in the usual way.

Don't forget people, you have to be in your sixties before your chances of survival fall below 99%.
And if you‘re in your 60s it‘s a bit better than 96%. Better odds than me surviving another 10 years post breast cancer. Independent events though, so you could be the one in 99 or 96.

My husband is teaching all his classes online, or via Podcast with online office hours. His research is not lab-based, but lots of data manipulation. His Uni Zürich Building is closed, but he has a bunch of official forms he must present in case he is required to attend a meeting somewhere. Am hoping those can be online too. All his MS, PhD and postdocs are working from home.

Nearly 300 returnees to Switzerland

Two planes bringing back to Switzerland Swiss tourists stranded abroad landed in Zurich on Tuesday. The flights originated from Costa Rica and Morocco.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said that 151 people had been repatriated from San José. A second aircraft chartered by the FDFA landed at Zurich airport in the evening from Casablanca with around 130 Swiss nationals on board. All of them will have to submit to a ten-day quarantine period.

A return flight from Bogotá, Colombia, is scheduled for Wednesday and another on Thursday morning from Lima, Peru. The FDFA plans to repatriate a total of 750 people by Thursday.

Dozens of flights are planned

In the coming weeks, the Swiss Confederation is planning several dozen flights to destinations such as Latin America, Asia and Africa. On Thursday, one is scheduled for Dakar, Senegal, and on Saturday another for Santiago de Chile.

The flights are pre-financed by the Swiss Confederation, but passengers must contribute to the costs. It is still too early to put a figure on the cost.

The FDFA calls on all tourists to register on the Travel admin application, leaving a contact number.

It's true that there are very high chances of survival for the young. I like the optimism, but the "survival chances" are not equally distributed among the young.

I know students from my wife (children) with diabetes type 1. Just a few weeks ago, another EF member posted about her daughter with diabetes and troubles at school. My brother had asthma as a child, luckily the thing minimized when he grew up. One of my best friends still has asthma as a 40 something adult, he's carrying one of those cans to recover his breath all the time if needed. Age may be irrelevant when you were not that lucky in the genetic lottery.

Surprised nobodies commented on this, or is it a given 'that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer' out

Your risk as a group. Your individual risk will vary based on your individual factors. As it will for every age group.

Let's see.

1. Totally unrelated to Corona - Check.
2. Rich people have belongings that they like to keep safe - Check.
3. Article more than 2 yrs old - Check.
4. Attempting with repeating it to open a non-relevant discussion in this topic - Check.

Well if you want a comment, here is one:

Why did you even bother to post this here instead of somewhere else on the forum?

You're actually required by law to keep provisions and some other stuff in your keller for this type of situations (they were thinking of nuclear wars back then), there was a list somewhere I might find a bit later.
Not mandatory but strongly recommended. See here or search for "kluger Rat - Notvorrat".

It's not that long since storing large quantities of food (e.g. in the cellar) was common practice around here, probably like you remember from home. Not so much because of the official recommendation but out of necessity. In my childhood we simply had to buy large quantities to store when they were in season and (at least relatively) cheap, there was no other way of getting by with five kids. But with food continually getting cheaper (at least in terms of household income), smaller households, and uninterrupted availability in any quantity you might imagine that's largely gone out of fashion.

Besides, using the stuff you have in store is precisely the plan, you want to keep it in the "use by" range (though in most every case it's still good long after that date as long as the container is tight and not deformed). You just have to remember to refill in time, and if you do so at a reduced price you even save a bit.

Re: Coronavirus

Diabetes, including Type 1 diabetes has been mentioned many times as a risk factor.

One factor influencing this for both Type 1 and Type 2 is how well the patient is controlling their blood sugar levels. High BS, particularly over time, reduces the ability of bodies to fight off infections.

Having an HbA1c (a typical measurement of long term glucose control) of 6.5~7.0 (5.5 is 'Normal') will increase survivability. Your risk increases the higher your A1c is. Anything above 10 means you should be in a lockdown situation, not being in contact with others, even family members if they are in contact with others.

This info I have gleaned from many different places on the tinternet, so I can't give you a link. But the message is clear. Keep your BS under control (in both senses) to reduce your risk of serious complications from the disease.

And what is your personal definition of "micro-population"?

Surely if we keep making up our own definitions and exclude states according to our own chosen criteria we could say Switzerland has the most. But is that really how it works?????

Agreed

As a Canadian I hereby define Switzerland as a microstate since Canada has 8 islands bigger than Switzerland and 8 lakes bigger than the largest canton. Switzerland fits 22 times inside my province of origin which isn't even the largest province in Canada.

Aside from that coronavirus isn't an Olympic event where we need to crown gold, silver and bronze. It's enough to acknowledge that it is bad here at the moment while acknowledging it is objectively worse elsewhere (Spain, Italy, Iran) at the moment.

From Italian data: for those aged 50-59 the death rate has been 1.1% (but many more get seriously ill with possible permanent lung damage)

I'm not getting all this hand wringing and drama.

If you're in a risk group, look out for yourself.
If you're not in a risk group, you're very, very, very likely to be ok if you are unfortunate enough to catch it.
