Where did you read that?

"There are no reliable figures on the lethality of COVID-19. What is certain is that simply dividing the number of deaths by the number of diseases detected leads to a substantial overestimation of the so-called "Case Fatality Rate" (CFR)."
I agree and even conducting calculations based on dicey data is not advisable.

I seem to remember that ever John Hopkins UNI is getting data from news sources.

So very foolish to jump to conclusions.

I think the cool heads are learning, learning, as fast as they can and as far as the rest goes, letting it play out and observe.

The Australian UNI/hospital (I think) that obtained a early infected person who flew in right after the outbreak from China is doing exactly that. Over time testing and observing. Good science happening there.

We are at the early stage of learning.

If there is one thing that this virus has laid bare it is the dishonesty and lack of ethics of people. This killer with the 7 day pause exploits that issue in society.

And it is exactly this issue that is causing problems with getting reliable information.

OK maybe I should leave this comment to the trump thread but this man is using it to do a dead wood clean out. It is painfully obvious now what he is doing. Trump will walk out a with more money that god or something else might happen there...

We have really no choice but too wait and see what happens to him.

Re: Coronavirus

This is how they beat corona virus in Russia:

Day one. Funny people show up at your home because your colleague tested positive to corona

They seal the door and swab everything around

They are very nice and bring you to hospital and give you simple flu medicine

On day 3 they check lungs, oxygen etc

On day 4 they tell you you are done here, go home

When you arrive home they put this GPS tracker on you, no going out for 2 weeks

On day 5 back to the local water

The most painful from this experience?

There was no ice for the vodka on the 5th day!

At first, to make sure to disinfect if something of the bat virus was left

Perhaps it isn't such a surprise from Vladimirovich, you'd expect that from a despot.

The bigger pain today is the ruined European dream. If we don't have that, what do we have in Europe?

How can you have a unified approach when a bunch of states are being preventative and other bunch believe in protecting just the most at-risk group and protecting economy? Those two approaches are diametrically oposite. It is hard to believe that there wasn't any solid crisis plan.

Funny how is done in Russia.

It should have been done here with everyone coming from the so-called affected areas right from the start, but Switzerland didn't believe it can hit them too. They lost at least one week, which is now translated into an avalanche of cases. Private companies reacted earlier, it's ridiculous. Lots of people were allowed to work from home one week before they closed the schools...sigh.

When I heard Sommaruga saying "We're a rich land, we're going to manage this" my reaction was dam', we're screwed. The next day people started hamster shopping, so it seems I wasn't the only one thinking something is very wrong here.

And for those still recommending others to take a stroll because nothing happens....well, that is not very Swiss of you, you know who you are. I thought the Swiss take official recommendations seriously and don't look to fool authorities because they won't be caught.....

No, stay at home. You'll take as many strolls as you wish when things come down. But you won't, because you probably started this thing only when you discovered it's close to be forbidden. And it will, if people continue to do what they do now.

And some private companies are stupid and require people to come to work even if everything can be done remotely (and the employees have been doing that for the last couple of days)......

According to the German saying: Vertrauen ist gut, Kontrolle ist besser (to trust is ok, to control is better)

Which means that despite being in a risk group, I have to work 50% of the time in the office

Economy über alles ?

Amazing. But in the negative way. It's clear, everything will last a lot longer in CH. I feel for you. Please ask your boss if he's willing to take any responsibility in case something happens. And remind him again of official recommendations, this is very serious. Don't allow them to push you around, please!

Re: Coronavirus

The reason the medical staff are dying is virul overload.
Their immune systems cannot clear the virus as quick as they are being constantly exposed to it.
You could also argue (someone will) that they have the wrong equipment.

Listening to the radio last night, a guest who was a professor of virology said his estimate was that covid-19 is 45x more deadly than seasonal flu.
That opinion does not fit with the (current) statistics though.

My tactic of mindfulness, crystals and a dab of aromatherapy oil behind the ears before I go out seems to be keeping me safe anyway.

Don't forget you are in control of your own well being. You don't HAVE to do anything you don't want to.

Nicely said, the alternative probably is being fired. Not a good alternative these days.

"viral overload" attractive sounding theory but is there any evidence to support it? For me, it is more likely their immune systems are weakened by extreme overwork plus people who are tired get careless.

I remember reading a few weeks ago about one Italian hospital that more or less shut itself down for 17 hrs so everyone could get some sleep, after working 12 hr shifts for 21 straight days. And that was back when there were only 100 dead/day in Italy, and not nearly 1000.

Actually viral load is something slightly different. Anyhow, this New Scientist article clearly indicates your claim is not true. Quoting...:

Quote:
If you have a high viral load, you are more likely to infect other people, because you may be shedding more virus particles. However, in the case of covid-19, it doesn’t necessarily follow that a higher viral load will lead to more severe symptoms.

For instance, health workers investigating the covid-19 outbreak in the Lombardy region of Italy looked at more than 5,000 infected people and found no difference in viral load between those with symptoms and those without.

Oh and....
