For those who understand German and actually want to read something that doesn't come with a dramatic headline:
https://www.nzz.ch/panorama/die-wich...rus-ld.1542774

This puts a lot of stuff into the perspective many here, including myself, have been advocating for, without fear-mongering, without sensationalism, but also without downplaying anything either.

"Personally, I would say the best advice is to spend less time watching TV news which is sensational and not very good. Personally, I view this Covid outbreak as akin to a bad winter influenza epidemic. In this case we have had 8000 deaths this last year in the ‘at risk’ groups viz over 65% people with heart disease etc. I do not feel this current Covid will exceed this number. We are suffering from a media epidemic!"

Professor John Oxford, English virologist
He certainly wasn't down-playing the severity of the coronavirus in the following interview.

"We’ve underestimated the power of viruses like these. SARS started-up, infected 8000 people, and died-out with a lot of effort, public-health intervention and pressure. MERS hasn’t died-away, but was a fairly small outbreak, and now we have this. We’re going to have to learn to develop some vaccines and anti-viral drugs, these outbreaks will continue to happen again, and again, we have to get ourselves sorted. This virus is not a clock, it’s a surviving creature, it wants to move, it wants to go from person to person- that’s what it wants. It couldn’t care less whether you have containment, it just wants to move- and by getting too close to each other, the virus proliferates. If we had engaged in these basic things back when we first heard about Covid-19, it would have saved us a lot of bother, perhaps we could have even knocked the virus on its head.
In 1918, that’s exactly what they dd in some cities in the United States. Some cities like New York and San Francisco introduced masks (home made!), disinfection, social distancing, school closures, banned public gatherings…. They did it in a layered way and they flattened out the curve and were able to deal with the pandemic more efficiently.
The biggest lesson from 1918 is this. We cannot hang around, we cannot wait for mathematical models to advise us, this is common sense, if a virus emerges, you have to stop it immediately."

I take it some factories figured out how to adapt their processes to the situation. Just like companies that never even dreamt of home-office managed to adapt theirs.
Rolex watches are now produced as they were cheese or chocolate.

Most welcome (funnily I didn't have to register - not sure why not)

I also recommend the case studies that are linked in the first article. https://www.nzz.ch/visuals/coronavir...#back-register

Which also illustrates, among other things, that Switzerland actually reacted quickly (first case in late Feb). I know you've been making that point for a while, so just reinforcing that.

Thank you, very informative indeed.

I'd like to share a little interview with you with the coordinating head of all Ticino's ICUs Paolo Merlani which was printed (electronically) in today's newsletter from "Republik": https://www.republik.ch/2020/04/02/covid19 (sorry, only available in German).

He basically states the following important facts: during normal times, Ticino counts 40 ICU beds in public hospitals and another 12 in private hospitals. They have currently 130 beds and are working close to the limit. Last weekend they were close to occupying all beds, but then 3 patients were transferred to canton AG, which gave them some air to breath in a tight situation.

Another (German) newsletter from DocCheck https://www.doccheck.com/de/detail/a...tmung-und-dann reports that of five people that need to be ventilated with the diagnosis Covid-19, four will not survive. The survivor will have a high risk of ventilator-induced lung damage that does not heal well.

This is not just a flu. Yes, it's lucky for us young people that we are mostly spared, but someone in their fifties is somewhere near their mid-life crisis. Covid-19 is not a very gentle way to end this crisis...

Well it's not going too well in Alexandra, Guateng. OH's family business was in Kew, less than 4km from Alexandra, and he still follows IOL daily.
Thanks for remembering the people living in South Africa.

Here's a news report from downtown Johannesburg. South Africa Lockdown Day 7, 02.04.2020
https://youtu.be/b2sye1rtY50

And here's one from a rural town some hours from Durban 02.04.2020
https://youtu.be/oibrjnNMw1o
That long queue is of people waiting (for a very long time) to be allowed into the grocery shop. For many, that's also the place to draw cash.

And a video comment by a private person living on the famous Garden Route, trying to show the huge gaps in living standards, and what that means for lockdown. 01.04.2020
https://youtu.be/CJWfd9jJHJE

These put my/our/Swiss discussions and grumbles into some perspective, I find.

I'll read it. But why do you think people read only dramatic stuff? I'm watching the news every day. Are they dramatic there on SRF? We're looking at numbers and they are dramatic for the time being. The lockdown is absolutely necessary.

My OH has made a few mathematical models the other day (out of "fun", this is his way of having fun lol) and he's a bit more optimistic now because things seem to ameliorate in time, but only if we continue to do what we do now. I find more dramatic these calls to return to business asap, they are ignoring what epidemiologists say and they are they only people whose advice should be followed as the Holly Book under these circumstances.

Omi, I don't watch CNN. I am pretty sure the greatest nation in the world will work it out, if they don't have something i.e. masks etc they'll take it from somewhere. America first!, as president Donald trump used to say.

Indeed:

(Stand 26. 3.)

Re: Coronavirus

The closer the weekend gets, the more urgent the sound becomes. Better: the undertone. There is still no curfew. Still. To keep it that way, we have to follow the rules. The threatening approach of strict (kind?) parents to their fickle offspring.

One thing is clear: the nervousness in the Federal Council and in the administration before the coming weekend is great. More than twenty degrees have been reported, bright sunshine. The crisis communication becomes an annotated weather report. As of Friday, new advertisements and posters will be placed in most Swiss newspapers, «Stay at home even in good weather. Now more than ever »can be read on it. Underneath is a stylized house with a radiant Sun
