Yes. Paranoia. It simply reals the " dark side" of people. They would kill over masks etc if they were forced to. SAD!
It's sad that people are putting so much stall in masks.

In one way, it's good that we're thinking about things and taking them seriously, but in another way, it will bring out the darker side of some people. So be it.

Personally, I'm peeved that we've decided not to visit OH's mum in Athens in a couple of weeks time. She's 90 and neither of us want to take the risk of unwittingly making her ill.

Silly things that come to mind are...
I'm glad that I saw my dental hygienist last week and don't have to see her again for a good few months. I'd hate to be a dentist, or any member of the medical professions at this point in time.
Co-op home deliveries are going to be doing very good business.
It would be great if people who can work from home are given that option sooner rather than later.
I've realised that I have a habit of pressing buttons on lifts, trams, trains, etc, with my knuckle because I'm usually carrying bags of shopping.
Thankful that I have a Karcher steam cleaner and treadmill if we do end up being in lockdown.
Realising that whilst all this sounds a little melodramatic, there's god knows how many thousand people 3hrs down the road who, just a week ago, didn't expect to find themselves in the position they're now in.

Hopefully.
I'm still used to the UK being quite a nanny state, so it's interesting to me to see how other states behave with such things.

What will do with the Karcher on lock down?

I think we'd be fine on lockdown, we're in a small quiet village, stand alone house with everything we need, plenty of food, outside space, I can work at home ..

Re: Coronavirus

In the end, we need to safeguard the sick and elderly against this virus. The healthy will survive (having symptoms like many other types of influenzas) but the contagious factor is dizzingly high. If I get the virus, I'll have to stay away from other people in my place as one of them is fighting cancer and I don't want to be known as the person who passed it on to him.

That's what makes this virus so deadly...the healthy will recover but those with pre-existing conditions might not.

A full deep clean so it'll stop me getting too bored. Can easily spend a day cleaning random stuff with that thing. Got some seeds that need planting up too. It'd drive me doolally watching telly all day for 2 weeks, so I'm lining up some 'options'.

I don't think the UK is a nanny state. Not when nanny is used as an insult. The response in the UK seems quite measured.

"a Karcher steam cleaner and treadmill". Clever these multipurpose devices I assume the treadmill generates the steam?

Theres no law that says you have to stay at home. Legally they cant enforce it.

Yeah, but symptoms don't appear until 2 to 14 days after exposure. So I think it's a bit of a moral obligation to try to limit contact as much as possible if there's an outbreak in your area. You could have it and not even know it.
I also read this: "There is also good evidence, as yet unconfirmed, that the virus can be spread by asymptomatic people - that is people who carry the virus but are not yet sick."

Yes and no.

They could declare state of emergency, which allows for different measurements, in such situation if they have proper reasons they can simply forbid you to be on the streets and if you do arrest you.

Anyway, such situation is not really at discussion yet.

The Italians have unwittingly spread the virus to Austria, Croatia and Palmero. It's like watch a very slow train wreck.

Nanny in this context is a good thing. What the UK has that some countries don't, is a (near) fully integrated medical system. If someone is taken ill away from home in any part of the country, the physician treating them can readily gain access to the patient's medical history and current medication without having to wait days for files to be transferred. I compare that to the running around we've done in recent years ferrying medical files from one end of Athens to the other and back again, and the failure of Swiss doctors to recall patients, which we've both experienced. The patient has to be a lot more proactive here, and to the point of exhaustion in Greece.

Austria Reports Its First Two Coronavirus Cases as Outbreak Widens
In the Austrian province of Tyrol, two people have been proven to be infected with the coronavirus. A second test was also positive. These are the first two confirmed cases in Austria. The infected persons are two 24-year-old Italians from Lombardy who live in the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck.

Yep, read a piece (No English) with an interview with one of the people living in the red zone who simply declared that they cared shit about not being allowed to travel, they just go through the woods to do shopping in stores outside the zone.

Makes one wonder at what point should we say "o.k. containment is no longer an option and also economically becomes to expensive, just let it rip through society"

Coronavirus: Iran's deputy health minister tests positive as outbreak worsens

Wow. I've often said that it would just take one government minister/senior politician to suffer some tragedy (disease/shooting death/earthquake/whatever) to trigger the change that society needs. Maybe this will be it, for Iran, at least.

Last I time I heard the spread is very likeky within the 2wk asymptomatic incubation time period, hence most probably unwitting. All it takes is just applying the lock down too late and close off an area that doesn't cover the real spread. The trains from Italy and planes, buses are still moving to CH. I don't like to think about it.
