Repatriation flights? Who pays for them- do the passengers contribute? A young British musician friend who has been working in India for months, realised things were getting tough- and he spent ALL HIS MONEY to get on the last flights from Goa/Bangalore to Mumbay, then to Amsterdam and back to Gatwick- 2 weeks ago. When he arrived back, NO checks, nothing- no instructions to self-isolate- (which he has done of his own accord). Now Brits on holiday in Goa and region and all over the world are being repatriated- and again, NO CHECKS and NO instructions. 2 others Indian + Austrian we repatriated to Germany then Austria last week- they were checked and given instructions to self-isolate.

A 4th musician friend, Spanish, is stuck in Goa and cannot get back to Spain - not sure even if that would be a good idea. Friends of friend got back on rescue flight from Madrid- a hot spot, and NO checks, NO instructions sheer madness.
What is sheer madness is people who were too daft to get on flights home weeks ago when all the signs were there that everywhere was going to be bad and the governments were already advising people to fly home.

This. The world was shut down to prevent collapses of healthcare systems. Beyond that, there is no danger to the massive majority of people. If some folks decide to lock themselves in for months to come, that's their decision. At the aggregate level it will no longer be necessary, perhaps with the exception of some hotspots. .

I wish you were right, but it seems the virus can be fatal even to the young(er) and healthy. We don't know exact numbers, we don't know a lot of things for the time being. Numbers and rates keep shifting.

I guess many people have either bought into this idea or are simply more optimistic. I hope they'll stay safe.

It's also plain naive to believe this thing just got here 5 weeks ago (it was likely at least 3 months or more) or that it will disappear entirely just because you locked everyone in for a while -.
It's circulating here since it circulated in China and no-one has warned anyone and the tourism and business travels kept going on.

- we will simply have to live with it going forward, just like we live with many other viruses we pay zero attention to as they present next to no danger to the huge majority. It will be more important now to understand how the virus "behaves" in real settings, instead of those artificial ones that were created. Otherwise we will never learn enough to understand how to treat it appropriately.
Again, I am not sure it presents next to no danger to the vast majority.

Neither of these studies mentions the "common cold" which is not surprising as this is mostly caused by rhinoviruses, and only occasionally by coronaviruses which were the ones studied.

According to the Worldometer site of all the closed COV-19 cases worldwide, 21% are closed by death!
Please refer to https://www.englishforum.ch/3169297-post6736.html

I had a number of very frightened friends who saw that figure and I had to explain it for them...

I would have done, but the cost of failing to complete a property purchase by 31st March would have cost over 100k in damages, no direct flights to Malta & Malta airport closed at Midnight on the scheduled completion day. In the UK such things are done by post & over the phone, in Countries where Napoleon was involved in the law it's more complicated. My wife was working in the UK, I also had to rescue her.

Number of deaths this year up to the end of March. Grippe saisonnaire means seasonal flu and Faim means hunger. The other causes of death are virtually the same word in English. Totalitarianism is also the same word in both languages.
As an aside, “perspective“ and “contemplation” are the same word in both too. 🌟♥️🙏

That's an error.

Check the "source" link for today's update, says 727 new cases for the 8th.
The source link now shows the 1'000+ figure for yesterday, hence it's not an error, just a difference in accounting. Maybe, BAG took a page or two from their Chinese counterparts.

Similar to all the horror stories in the press about people on or returning from cruises right now.
I immediately look in the article about when they left on the cruise. If after 01 MAR - then they deserve the Darwin award IMHO.

Totally. I see them here, particularly last Sunday, and hear about them in the UK too.

My brother usually walks 2 miles down the canal path from his house into town and usually only sees 2 or 3 other people. He's not been able to do that since the lockdown because the path is far too busy. When he was on the phone yesterday, he could count over 40 people on the 50 meter stretch of the path visible from his house.

One friend sent a video this morning showing how the queue for Greggs is far longer than the queues for all the banks combined. Typical! Only in Wigan would people queue for an hour to get a pie. Also found out that the reason our tenant hasn't claimed the offered rent holiday is that the hotel where she is assistant manager, is being used to house 25 homeless people and NHS staff who need to isolate from their families. Thankfully, the hotel is big enough to house them in separate wings.

Here, I'm wondering if the police are going to close the main road outside our house except for emergency vehicles. It's been mentioned as a possibility and they've been actively checking the number plates of traffic passing along it. We shall see...

Greggs has been shut since around the 24th March.

Edit: caught up with thread. Baboon already said this!

Re: Coronavirus

Maybe I should post this on the "Trump US president" thread...Not too sure!

No one here has referenced Dr Fauci's revised estimates for the US yesterday. In case you had not read, Dr Fauci has revised his earlier estimates of 100,000 to 200,000 deaths in the US (which he called conservative a few weeks ago) to now only 60,000.

https://www.npr.org/2020/04/09/83066...=1586461463382

To quote Shakespeare, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark"! How did this so called "Conservative" estimate ratchet down from 100,000 to 200,000 to now a mere 60,000?

I am starting to believe we should have adopted the herd immunity approach which Sweden adopted. This pandemic shut down the US economy and put over 16 million out of jobs as of today and NOW they predict in the US, that only 60,000 will die? As reference, the mortality rate of the flu in the US for this year ranges between 24,000-63,000.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden...-estimates.htm

Something is amiss to me to here. What rhymes with collusion? Given his recent estimate, I don't trust Fauci (who by the way sits on Gates' foundation; and Gates is a huge advocate of China!) nor do I trust the WHO - both of whom downplayed the epidemic and China mid January.

This is a travesty on all levels! And so we are supposed to shut down the economy, according to Fauci until a vaccine is found?

Note, I was a believer until Fauci's death estimates yesterday... And what about those impoverished - living paycheck to paycheck and the consequences for them?

No one cared about the death stats regarding influenza before today and now this Covid virus, at least in the US, is looking more like a bad influenza year...

Seems to be a trend at the moment to post the numbers of deaths from different causes without any explanation of why they are relevant or quoting any credible source?

Hard to believe so many seasonal flu deaths with all this social distancing.

Here we are on 9th April with 90,000 COV-19 deaths vs the 36,000 on 30th March in your post, so what should we conclude? That COV-19 is overtaking most other causes with 6,000 deaths per day so at least 500,000 deaths in the next three months?

And anyway what are tobacco and alcohol deaths? Somehow different from cancer deaths? How the hell does anybody know tobacco or alcohol was the root cause.

Perhaps you should quote a bit more of what he said.

Quote:
He says that social distancing and behavior changes are “starting to have a real effect” and that the virus death toll may look “more like 60,000 than the 100,000 to 200,000” initially predicted.
So the US has actually avoided a large number of deaths due to actions taken since his earlier estimate.

Got it but at what cost exactly? And note his original estimates of 100,000 to 200,000 were extremely conservative and in the best case scenario (according to Fauci at that time).

So let's take 100,000 to be nice here; then he is off by 40%? Really??

Not working for me...sorry! Their model is way off and shame on them for causing this panic. And to think of the havoc/stress this has caused those unemployed and small business owners - notwithstanding the US economy as a whole: an additional 16.7 million unemployed in 3 weeks time.

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/jo...ion-2020-04-09

Again, they predicted more than 200,000 deaths or possibly 100,000 provided they contained things. Something is grossly off with the modeling/math here.

Just my thoughts...

No mathematical model can possibly provide perfect projections for a biological phenomenon like this. But if I understand you correctly, you are unhappy and complaining because now only 60,000 are projected to die instead of 200,000; right?

Sounds like the government really cocked this up. Better not vote for Trump, then.
