Look, we're all basically clueless on what to do since statistics only show what has been reported. Each country is dealing with this in the best way they can but because of lack of experience, we're all making decisions with the limited information we have.

Personally, I wouldn't have closed schools or shops but would have banned large gatherings (where the virus seems to have been most active) and created heightened safety measures for those at risk. However, like in any company, a national strategy has been created to sail us through this storm.

To be honest, at the moment, I'm more worried about the economic fallout.
Schools are often large gatherings.

So from all that article, you like to miss the fact that the Spanish are changing their method to include only those that were indeed tested positive yet the big news for you is that they expect the numbers to surge on Wednesday?
Then please show me where it says that.

It does mention Barcelona and Madrid changing their local method to include the likes of care home deaths. But clearly says these are not included in the total.

It depends what you call a large gathering.

I think some social distance can be created at schools and I think children aren't prone to the same symptoms of the virus as those at risk are. I'm basing my theory on statistics I've seen, which all point to a low virus infection in children.

However, this is just my opinion and it doesn't really matter.

If you want to go that way maybe better not allow to post any news about corona at all on the forum.
It might be an idea for certain members to have their own thread then the rest of us have a choice whether we go into that thread or not, rather than have to wade through tripe to find common sense, rationale and news that actually relates to what we're experiencing. Just a thought...

On mainland Europe, agreed, and I would be of this opinion if it weren't for my brother's grandson being seriously ill with the virus a couple of weeks ago. He's 8yrs old with no underlying conditions. The locum doctor who was called to him was very, very close to calling an ambulance, but kept reassessing him every 8hrs for 48hrs. Also know 9 families who are sheilding children for 12 weeks, so there's a disparity between which kids can and can't go back to school at the moment.

In the UK, the BBC have played a blinder by launching the Spring/Summer term lessons online and thousands of laptops have been ordered in an effort to make sure kids don't miss out. Obviously there are flaws to this, but it's a positive move. I mean, who wouldn't want Brian Cox teaching their Science lessons!

I'd go further.
It will forever stick in my craw now that, in the midst of a pandemic, this forum allowed false information to be posted at an alarming rate (5 posts in this thread alone today so far) and did nothing. Just stood back, washed their hands of all responsibility, and in some cases, actively encouraged this behaviour, thereby making it nigh on impossible for useful information to get through and proper conversations to be had.
That would be a moderated newspaper comments section which is not what we are. And amongst the Mod team you will find a spectrum of different opinions on the pandemic, so if we all zapped posts we didn't agree with there wouldn't be much of a thread left.

Nobody has a monopoly on the truth and its only be airing all viewpoints that folk can see what's backed by science and what's just emotive nonsense. We continue to be vigilant to trolling/baiting and ad hominem attacks so please continue to report those.

Some mods should stop hiding behind "it's an opinion" since this is not about opinions but about continuously posting false facts.

And telling members to stop groaning on posts with false facts is no more or less than a showcase of total bollocks.

One huge clue into how to spot a troll, they're the one talking of 'panic' when everyone else is being calm, measured and stoic.

This.

Permitting this trolling, encouraging it even, under the ridiculous guise of "the other side " of the argument is awful.

Mods, you aren't being open minded, or cool, or enabling the diverse thought cloud or whatever, you are allowing proven false information to cloud this very important topic.
You speak as if the science and statistics are fully agreed upon. How can you call for opinions to be shut down when there is insufficient evidence for either side to be right or wrong?

You'd think given the MASSIVE successes of the previous campaigns Led By Donkeys would have thrown the towel in by now!

I suspect it's the same couple of posters that are always reporting posts, therefore the natural response from the moderation is yarn & think not them again.

I honestly wouldn't know which members are "always reporting posts" but it appears that certain members do. My query is how?

Top right traffic sign! I only used it a couple of times, once after receiving a death threat as a PM.

And with all due respect, there is zero doubt that a lot of what's been going on has been massively influenced by (social) media and unfiltered information overload and that mass panic has indeed been nurtured in the process. To turn a blind eye on that and completely deny it is wrong.
As I wrote some pages back, I still haven't seen or heard any message, neither on this forum, nor in Switzerland online or in my real life, nor elsewhere online (even from people who are describing very dire circumstances) nor from what my friends in different places in the world write to me, that would, in any way, qualify as "mass panic".

Since you, Samaire, and you, V__, mention it, I think this means either that you see panic in places in which I don't happen to be looking, or that we have dissimilar thresholds for when we rank worry as panic.
