I wonder if plane tickets will get even cheaper to lure over-cautious travelers in or more expensive to extort from those who must fly?

I find it interesting that Warren Buffett/Berkshire Hathaway has divested all of his/their shares in airlines as he believes that industry will have a tough recovery and will probably not recover. PS Berkshire is sitting on a boat load of cash which tells me that the markets are not at the nadir.

Given that many airlines - riding "the good times" for the last 7-8 years, chose to buy back shares instead of retaining cash reserves in a very cyclical industry, well, I have no sympathy for most airlines - American Airlines in particular. All they did, was pad their own pockets.
I expect as a result of fewer people flying, fewer airlines and less price squeeze that the cost of flying will go up after this is all over.

Which is a good thing for the climate, it was too much anyway.

Things that have value, real value, will thrive, industries based on artificial needs will not.

People who got rich by betting all their money on airlines and tourism....well. They'll have to clean their own houses I suppose.

Whilst there may be some merit to your first point, I don't think your last one is fair. Tourism and air travel support many people and their families who aren't by any stretch of the imagination "rich".

As before I think we will need to look back at the 'new normal' that emerged in the 1920's, as people
cautiously returned to air traval again after the Spanish flu pandemic, as regards people distancing and
in-flight entertainment.

If there was a shread of doubt the Swedes got it right, the economic figures end the debate:

Economic Growth - first three months of 2020:

France: -5.8%
Italy: -4.7%
Spain: -5.2%,

...

Sweden: -0.3%

From the government of Sweden....

"The global economy, like the Swedish economy, is expected to enter a recession with strongly negative GDP growth in 2020.

Swedish GDP is expected to drop by 4 per cent in 2020, which is on a level with the drop during the financial crisis. The negative growth rate and the considerable numbers reported so far of people who have been given notice of the termination of their contracts reinforce the expectation that the labour market will become significantly worse, with falling employment and rising unemployment. The employment rate is expected to fall clearly to just below 67 per cent, compared with 68.3 per cent in 2019, and unemployment is expected to rise to 9 per cent in 2020."

Indeed. National news are pushing local tourism big time every edition, past week or two. Though not sure if many people will be able to afford it, I hope so.

Switzerland Q1 2020 numbers are still not there. The recommendation to stay at home started 2 weeks before the end of Q12020 both in CH and FR.

Considering a quarter has 12 weeks, 2 weeks of lockdown, 2/12 ~ 12%. The -5.8% could be interpreted as the economic activity occurring at half the usual rate.....from this point of view the glass looks half-full

I don’t think the first quarter figures are an indicator of anything to be honest.

The second quarter data will be more useful.

Well, it puts enough food in our bellies, helps to keep water drinkable and air breathable. Is there something more fundamental than these? One only starts to think about meaning, deities or whatever after a good meal
yup we know the pyramid. we just need to keep science from getting out of hand...

I would assume Q1 figures are less immediately relevant and the real contraction hasn't even fully begun. Would expect the South to contract significantly (possibly more than "just" recession unless they somehow salvage part of their summer tourism money), Switzerland somewhere in the middle, and Sweden closer to Switzerland or better.

Re: Coronavirus

Since last Saturday the news of a beef shortage in the US were discussed on Bloomberg and twitter. Yesterday, the news arrived to mainstream media. https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/05/b...age/index.html

I'm curious if the temporarily closure of McDonalds was also related to a beef shortage. It was really suspicious that local McDo decided to close only to protect employees and customers. If there was no beef, better close instead of killing the brand by not selling proper burguers.

A month ago there was a thread on price gouging around EF, tomatoes and other products. For sure there were disruptions of the food supply chain but nothing arrived to the point of a shortage and dramatic price hikes. So, cheers for the problems that never occurred.

I don't know what world you're living in, I've been working and so have most people I know, most from home, some in the office, some in customer facing roles.

Ah now, they can hardly be called "proper burgers"
They can just follow Burger Kings process and cook meatless patties on all those meat grills, maybe sprinkling a bit of leftover beef drippings to ensure they don't advertise them as vegetarian.

Yes and no, it also means less interest for company's to upgrade their fleet to much less fuel consuming newer planes.
