According to WHO, once the illness has been confirmed, it all should be counted as COVID-deaths.
It is irrelevant what WHO thinks since they do not do the counting and reporting.

This crisis resembles Eastern European experiences.
- closed borders
- massive and relatively sudden unemployment after the collapse of common market
- IMF agreements that proved to be disastrous for many many sectors - closed factories, dubious privatisations, dubious repossessions, low investments in the public sectors etc etc
And I can come up with more similarities. Nobody cried for us back then. People had to accept, adapt and survive.

Your turn guys, 'cause for us there was always a crisis. "Crisis? What crisis? We've always lived in a crisis." (to quote someone from back home)
Not quite - if your talking about the days when Eastern European countries were part of the Soviet Bloc and
members of the Warsaw Pact ? - when there were 100's of thousends of Soviet & Warsaw Pact troops,
tanks and aircraft that was poised ready to invade Western Europe at any time.
Not forgetting all the NATO forces like BAOR poised on the other side in West Germany, etc. ready to
fend them off.

Although you could say that Europe was 'living on a powder keg' it didn't explode throughout the many
years & decades of the Cold War. If that's the sort of crisis your referring too ?

As for their Common Market are you talking about Comecon ?

Council for Mutual Economic Assistance called Comecon

Re: Coronavirus

The Swedish PM has a few words for those who think it's businesses as usual in Sweden. From the Guardian ticker but I guess you can find it on Reuters

Quote:
Sweden has not declared a full lockdown, in sharp contrast to many of its European neighbouring countries, instead adopting a mix of legislation and recommendations in response to the virus. Some foreign newspapers and broadcasters have widely labelled a relatively soft policy.

Stefan Lofven said he rejected that narrative: “The image that Sweden is doing so totally different than other countries, that’s not the case.

The Swedish model for managing society was built on trust between citizens, who had “a responsibility to do the right thing”, and lawmakers and other authorities, he told a briefing with foreign media.

Life is not carrying on as normal in Sweden. It is not business as usual.”

Current guidelines have banned large gatherings, while high schools and universities are closed. The government has recommend social distancing, protecting the elderly, working from home and staying at home if unwell.

Elementary schools however remain open, people have not been obliged to stay indoors and can meet in small groups, and stores have not been forced to close.

Sweden has registered more than 3,500 coronavirus-linked deaths – a toll far lower than many large EU countries but around five times higher than Denmark and more than 10 times that of its other Nordic neighbours.

Sweden finally in top 10! Number 8 though, behind France Italy, UK and Spain in deaths per 1M population. Lock down works people!

You could also say 40% of Belgium' rate of deaths/million population.
And you could also say 4 times higher than Denmark.

That's one of the very many advantages of living here, everything arrives with 10 years delay.

Besides, you may want to update your location, your profile still says CH.

More information regarding Russian numbers.

Apparently their ministry of health issued an directive earlier this year to attribute deaths of people with pre-condition(s) to pre-conditions, not COVID. I.e. if a guy with cancer got COVID and died, the cause of death will be cancer, not COVID.

This could explain the lower mortality (besides the explanation that it is always lower at the beginning).
Also they may not have as many oldies available, life expectancy is still low there at 72 years combined (only 65 for men!)

I think you should try sarcasm less frequently, Urs. You're not good at it, seriously.

Everything arrives here with 10 years delay? What on earth are you talking about and what's your point? Do you think Swiss economy has 10 more years to deal with recession? Like they thought corona virus won't really reach Switzerland? Like that? And then we had to lock ourselves in our homes (those responsible at least) for 2 months because they didn't take the appropriate measures earlier? Not a travel warning to people who travelled to Asian countries, not checking anyone upon their arrival here. And many, many other...are you for real?
OH has a colleague who travelled to all the important Asian countries in March! beginning of March, was questioned in every airport - Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand....nothing, absolutely nothing when he got to Zurich.

You're living on another planet then, not planet Switzerland. Don't preach me anything because I don't take any shit from people who can't communicate. And yeah, "if you don't like it here go home"....spare me. I am 100% sure the Swiss authorities won't agree with you on this one, and this is all it counts at the end of the day. Not the games on EF.

Probably other countries are doing the same, but this is not the correct way, neither was recommended by the (much criticised) WHO.

From both medical statistics and medical ethics' points of view it is wrong. The vast majority of people with the so called "co-morbidities" (rather chronic health conditions) could have lived a normal life for many years to come with the adequate treatment. Almost everything it appears to have been fatal illnesses corona time are easily managed or manageable currently.

Perhaps those future history books someone is frequently mentioning here will judge us (our collective humanity or lack thereof) because of the way we dealt with the weakest members of our societies: the old, the sick, the poor.

It's not over and we are to be held responsible. To future generations, if that matters to anyone here. (I doubt)

Why dont they simply have an app that gives out a warning when one is too close . Like the " pull up,pull up " warning in an aircraft.

I do wonder how future generations will view this era. I suspect WTAF will feature quite strongly. We've never had such easy access to immense amounts of knowledge and instant information, but I suspect the lack of effort in acquiring it has led to gross misuse and misunderstanding. I think we'll be damned for being able to instantly send money across the world, but not being able to feed the people in need on our doorstep without the use of food banks.

Wonder how many were accidental.
I once did a google search for a new drill bit to make a 10cm hole in the side of a kitchen cabinet. The results were astonishing/gobsmacking/intriguing/scary. Also, we had a spate of porn hits at work once because a member of the hotel team kept searching smoothhound.co.uk hotel site but spelling it wrong.
