"Fox News's Neil Cavuto warned that people must be careful with hydroxychloroquine, saying immediately after President Trump said that he had been taking the drug for more than a week that it could kill people who had certain underlying health conditions.

Cavuto cited a Department of Veterans Affairs study that demonstrated the risks of taking hydroxychloroquine if a patient has respiratory or heart ailments. The study showed patients, who had these conditions and took the drug, died."

Bizarre, just bizarre
I think it was in that same article where Trump noted that the VA are not Trump fans. So clearly, the study is to be discounted.

Keeping 2 meters apart, washing hands, staying at home if experiencing symptoms etc. can all be done without shutting all shops, restaurants, libraries etc.
I think the lockdown was the greatest thing they have done this century. It deserves some sort of award

Hasn't that been shown to be due to the larger number of women in jobs with more potential exposure?

Meanwhile the UK haven't been able to organize a quarantine for incoming arrivals and it looks set now to start in June. WHAT IS THE POINT?!?!?!

I think you're right, weirdly public confidence in the government's handling of the crisis remains high. How anyone can think they've done a good job is beyond comprehension.

I wonder how sardines will be prevented on beaches in Italy, higher prices? Or halving the capacity while keeping prices intact? Anyway I'm scredwed, 'cause I don't want my beautiful wild beach spots in Liguria get inundated with mainstream beach escapees...

It's bizarre. Same with the masks - no one was asked to wear any (in most countries) to go to the store or work (which obviously many or most still did), but now suddenly it's mandatory in some places?

By now (well not just by now, for a while now) this has become a completely absurd, twisted form of arms race "who can eliminate it the fastest and best and play hero" (when it was never even about elimination).

...Croatia, everything is open for a week already. I mean the whole country has less than 200 active cases, make absolutely no sense tourism not to be functioning at the moment
Are you perhaps Croatian? I was looking into a visit there for a nice beach holiday, but it seems they still are not fully open for non-citizens and certain workers. From the Croatian Institute of Public Health website (edited to keep shorter):

"Published: May 18, 20:00...

The Decision on the Temporary Ban of Transit through Border Crossings of the Republic of Croatia...and the Decision on the Amendment of the aforementioned Decision from 9 May 2020, allows:
  • Croatian citizens to enter into Republic of Croatia and go abroad.
  • The return to the country of residence for citizens of EU Member Countries, namely citizens of Schengen Countries and Schengen Associated Countries as well as their family members, and third-country nationals who are long-term residents..."

Like most EU countries, there are exceptions for healthcare workers, cross-border workers, and diplomats.

Further, if you're a foreign national you need to meet certain conditions in order to be allowed in (from the same site, again edited for space):

"Entry into the Republic of Croatia for foreign nationals. If the foreign national intends to cross the state border he has to meet one of the following conditions:
  • Possesses documentation with which he can prove ownership of real estate located in the Republic of Croatia, or vessel (lessee is also permitted), or is attending a funeral in the Republic of Croatia...
  • possess documentation with which they prove that they were invited to the Republic of Croatia by an economic operator, the economic operator’s interest for them to enter into Republic of Croatia, or a business meeting invite...
  • All other foreign nationals who have a certain business reason, which cannot be foreseen at this time, and do not have the appropriate documentation, should be instructed to announce their intention to cross the state border (enter into the Republic of Croatia) at mailto:uzg.covid@mup.hr and they will receive an answer as soon as possible."

EDIT:
Perhaps it's this, from the linked article.
"I was just waiting to see your eyes light up when I said this," he said.
The White House did not immediately reply to a request for further documentation to show that Trump is taking the drug, or at what dosage.
But even so... why?!

Why is this bizarre? I have been pointing out for months that you cannot make something mandatory, if it is in fact missing. Nobody could buy the masks in pharmacies, not mentioning Coop or where people get their masks now. They can only make it mandatory now, when you can actually get it for yourself and use it. It would surprise me if authorities said - masks mandatory, get them on Amazon. Those that were available had to be secured for health professionals. Now little businesses open hence the authorities demand that the clients and service people protect others and themselves.

What I don't like is that awful littering with tossing masks in public. It looks like people tossed them from their cars.

I think "safe" in the sense that if you had booked something and you would like to go, you are probably able to go without restrictions such as quarantine upon arrival.

Not necessarily "safe" in the sense of the virus magically disappearing.
