Reassuring that the severe cases aren't contracted locally, or are they only testing those showing symptoms and from affected areas?

They probably had contact with people from south of Milano (all of the quarantined villages are 40km south of Milano).

...and those south of Milano people are only going to be contacting Swiss residents and never anyone from central or north Milano?

There's another press conference starting now. That's a bit soon... the last one was only 2pm yesterday.

What if there's more than 1000 people in your company? Can we all go home?

They use the word Veranstaltung, unfortunately that does not include work

I talked to the department head at my job yesterday. Yes, home office is an option for employees. The company would lose some money on the people for whose home office is not an option......and we made some bad jokes about freelancers. We'll know next week.

It's all a conspiracy, no wonder our company has been switching people from a desktop thin client and over to laptops.
Ah well, at least I don't have to wear trousers at the home office.

Some companies set up rules as for meetings, no more shaking hands, educating employees, as much working from home as possible. Let's also not forget that one case in your company could simply lock the company doors for at least 2 weeks.

Most companies here in Singapore have been separating teams at work for weeks now. Some work at home, some in separate buildings. No contact allowed. It works here cos the locals and the expats are compliant (somewhat) Not sure if it would be so easy to enforce in Switzerland, Europe etc.
Not only that but we have temp checks at the office entrances, some malls and since yesterday my appartment...

Re: Coronavirus

The latest update in full:

Current situation in Switzerland

In view of the current situation and the spread of the coronavirus, the Federal Council has categorised the situation in Switzerland as ‘particular’ in terms of the Epidemics Act. Large-scale events involving more than 1000 people are to be banned. The ban comes into immediate effect and will apply at least until 15 March 2020.
The Federal Council is responding to the latest developments in the coronavirus epidemic and has categorised the situation in Switzerland as ‘particular’ in terms of the Epidemics Act. This enables the Federal Council, in consultation with the cantons, to order measures that are normally the responsibility of the cantons.

In Switzerland, infections with the new coronavirus have confirmed in fifteen cases. There have been reports of diseases from the cantons: Ticino, Geneva, Grisons, Aargau, Zurich, Basel-City and Vaud. All persons have been infected abroad. Their health condition is good. All those who are ill are isolated. The public health authorities are contacting people who have been in close contact with the person infected.
More than 500 people in Switzerland have so far been tested for the new coronavirus. Nose and throat swabs were taken and sent to laboratories for screening. A number of people are in quarantine in their canton of residence. They must stay at home and avoid contact with other people.
The federal government, the cantons and healthcare providers are prepared.

  • Testing for the new coronavirus has been intensified in people presenting flu-like symptoms.
  • More staff are operating the hotline in all national languages.
  • Travellers and cross-border commuters are being provided with advice at the border and at airports on what to do if symptoms appear (shortness of breath, cough or high temperature).
The federal government is working closely with the cantonal health authorities with regard to all measures.
No travel restrictions for entry into Switzerland

There are no travel restrictions for entry into Switzerland. Travellers and cross-border commuters will be updated on the current situation at the border and at airports.

OH was asked by his boss yesterday, what his home situation and facilities are like for home working? He said "Excellent", so it's looking like he might be under my feet for dog knows how many weeks

Question for Swiss members: I'm finding the format of the press conferences a little frustrating. I'm understanding a lot of the German answers, particularly from the lady on the panel, but then I hear an interesting question asked in French, and the reply is so fast that I can't keep up with it. Do Swiss people have the same issue? Also, are there separate press conferences in Italian?

To be fair, press conferences are for the press.
The journalists attending will then create their media for consumption by the general public - be that media newspapers, online or television.

The madness strikes here as well, not a tin of corn or baked beans to be had. Really, is that what people stock up with?

I did buy some flour and stuff to bake my own bread if necessary
