The madness strikes here as well, not a tin of corn or baked beans to be had. Really, is that what people stock up with?
Baked beans? I'm surprised at that. Just going to do my normal Friday shopping after doing my squirrelling last week. Just wish I'd had the foresight to buy the hand gel when I saw loads of it in a hardware store in Oerlikon.

They say the virus does not like warm temps. Therefore it would not survive in places like india for example
Question for any science based people who might know... I know a fair bit about bacteria affecting food hygiene, but pretty much stuff all about viruses. Does deep freezing just hibernate a virus in the same way it hibernates bacteria?

I did buy some flour and stuff to bake my own bread if necessary
For coughing elderly with 40deg fever opening a tin of corn vs baking bread makes a diffference. Pandemics also means that the able take care of the unable, it doesn't mean just to quarantine oneself away from germs.

I just spent a lil time with somebody with compromised health, whatever gifts ended up sprayed with Dettol and deep frost. You keep away a few meters, too. A can is a better idea then baking, of course.

That´s a different context. Why not stock up on vegetables rather than baked beans? All other vegetables in tins were normally available.

When I had 40 degree fever a long time ago, I didn´t have any appetite, whether it was beans, corn or anything else, just wanted to drink my tea.

And durability is important, if it all blows over one can just over the next year slowly consume them.

Question for Swiss members: I'm finding the format of the press conferences a little frustrating. I'm understanding a lot of the German answers, particularly from the lady on the panel, but then I hear an interesting question asked in French, and the reply is so fast that I can't keep up with it. Do Swiss people have the same issue? Also, are there separate press conferences in Italian?
I'm not that good in german or french but can surprisingly understand "easy" federal language like this.
In italian there are cantonal press conferences in Ticino where they also kind of repeat what was said on the federal conference before taking it to the local level. Also news stations have journalists that speak german and french to cover federal affairs.
But as it was said before the conferences are for the media and interested parties, not the population at large.

SRF say Basel Fasnacht is cancelled. baz.ch say a decision will be taken at midday.

First case of Covid19 in Baselstadt has been announced.
So the Basel Fasnach is cancelled? I am not a fan of Fasnacht and usually try to leave town for the time of the Carnaval, but this year I didn’t manage to. Of course this is not good that the reason for the cancellation is the Covid19 epidemic, but still no Fasnacht is a good news...

I am glad sanitizers have a million year shelf-life. We are still on a bottle I got when we got n1h1 jabs 11 years ago.

Btw, people, read somewhere again this morning that excrements contain the virus, if you are in a place where mask is suggested, wear it also when running out for a pee break.

My days of crapping into a mask are long gone.

I think that 3000 dead would disagree with you. Apetite or not, those well fed right before falling ill will have a better chance.

The time of public health threat, we better intelligently adjust to new contexts.

I think this post deserves its own Friday thread.

Cans are always good things to have on hand in case of emergencies but I don’t think baked beans are at the top of most people’s lists of things to stock up on in Switzerland.
They still had plenty in our coop this morning.

Have you ever had a high fever? And being well fed hasn´t stopped anyone from getting the virus, unfortunately.

I've read that Coronaviruses in frozen condition can become active again when warming up within 2 years.

It's an ancient English tradition, predating the Conquest and still lingering on in certain parts of what was Wessex.
