I was in Luzern on Saturday and saw a substantial number of people wearing surgical masks, some of them in vibrant fashionable colours.

By substantial I mean there was more than 20, when normally I see none.
I will say that a lot of the masks appear to be very loosely fitted with gaps in the sides and I can see a sneeze now going for a broadside attack as opposed to the standard straight forward.
Seems they're not AS effective as they're being made out to be. Some protection offered but...

Quote:
Dr David Carrington, of St George's, University of London, told BBC News "routine surgical masks for the public are not an effective protection against viruses or bacteria carried in the air", which was how "most viruses" were transmitted, because they were too loose, had no air filter and left the eyes exposed.

But they could help lower the risk of contracting a virus through the "splash" from a sneeze or a cough and provide some protection against hand-to-mouth transmissions.
I can see these masks becoming a bit moist from people breathing behind them, as well as being kept a bit warm from the breath and skin temperature which, all in all, is an ideal breeding ground for germs.

Think I'll just stick to washing my hands and avoiding touching my face.

Re: Coronavirus

The human race is due for a good culling, but let‘s have a decent one this time. Even the 1918 flu with up to 100 million wouldn’t make much of a dent in the seven billion on this rock today.

The Chinese are fully to blame for this epidemic and its to be fully expected. There in-hygienic and barbaric treatment of animals has resulted in this.

An epidemic (from Greek ἐπί epi "upon or above" and δῆμος demos "people") is the rapid spread of infectious disease to a large number of people in a given population within a short period of time, usually two weeks or less.

Re: Coronavirus

The most interesting part for me is how air pollution is completely ignored.

Ozone and nitrogen and sulfur oxides in polluted air contribute to chronic irritation of respiratory tracts making people more susceptible to contagion of any flu virus, including the new one.

Smog kills, but the villain is the virus.

Of course pollution is also part of the problem

Maybe not, but we have about 4 times the population now and a far higher proportion living in close proximity. With the amount and speed of travel that can happen these days a similar virus could make a more significant impact.
Then again healthcare has improved in most places and I'm guessing there are a load more factors so who knows?

Some would argue that treating cancer with ‘sympathy, support and prayers’ amounts to the same thing.

It’s not just the number of deaths that define an epidemic.

Wow, that's 100% increase!

You're losing your touch for dramatic phrasing
