Re: Coronavirus

Quote:
60 is the new 49

The greatest risk is to the 80 plus age group isn't it?
This is an extract from an article in the Daily Mail this morning

"You have a 1.3 per cent chance of dying from it in your 50s, a 3.6 per cent risk in your 60s, an eight per cent risk in your 70s, and a 14.8 per cent risk in your 80s.

Risk climbs with age because older people more often have other diseases, such as cancer or conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or pulmonary disease, which worsen Covid-19."

I can't vouch for the accuracy of it however.

Re: Coronavirus

the recommendation for people of certain ages to stay inside is partly self-protection, but also part of the attempt to prevent the medical system from being overrun. All it takes is one proper spread in one decent sized elderly home in Zürich to fill up our hospitals in town.

It's a fantastic season for pharamceuticals. I can imagine stocks will be going up in that sector
Why? It's not like there's any treatment for the new virus that's anything more than generic paracetamol or similar, and anti-bacterial hand gel is not something that big pharma companies are involved with.

You would think so, but the supply from China of many active ingredients is putting severe strain on pharma supply chains.

If they do, what realistic childcare options are there for working parents?
If they're closing schools, presumably a horde of teenagers will become available to babysit all day. If you have a babysitter already, get in touch and make an offer of employment.

A couple of days ago I bought a 500 ml bottle of hand disinfectant from Amazon@ 20 CHF. Should get it soon if its not stolen on the way!

Today in the morning the same thing was selling for 9CHF on Amazon.

Now I checked again and its no longer availabe. All that is now available is the same thing for 60CHF!!

Re: Coronavirus

I took my son to Milan for his break. Tomorrow will be 14 days since we returned from Milan (general guidelines for watching for symptoms is 14 days). He has no symptoms.

I was just informed by his school that any child that was in northern Italy must have a doctor's note to return to school; 14 days symptom free is apparently not good enough. They provide no direction (guidelines) about the time frame on when the child was in northern Italy. What if we returned 2 months ago? So he is on his way home early today.

I just had to call his very busy pediatrician to get him a visit for today. They are very kind and will squeeze him in. The next available appointment wouldn't be until Friday. Sigh. Caution is good. Hysteria is not.

People prepare for the worse and stash all sorts of medicines, like they stash food.....(just an assumption)

On a different note, there is no hand sanitiser and medicinal (rubbing) alcohol in the Swiss pharmacies...all gone. Whoever said people don't panic here....it was wrong.

But still we use the same amount over the year, busy counter now just means calm counter next month. They only get extra profit by selling extra hygiene/protecting stuff but only as much as they can supply which ain't that much. (unless they make their own disinfection liquid)

And if Corona really would hit they are about to lose a lot of their best customers.

Think about it logically. Just because all of the hand sanitizer in pharmacies is gone that doesn't mean that people panicked. It's not as though Swiss pharmacies hold enough stock to deal with even small portions of the country all buying it as the same time, is it? They rely on people buying it sporadically at different times.

Buying hand sanitizer at the time of a pandemic is a perfectly reasonable and sensible precaution that many people will obviously think of at similar times when pandemics are announced and is not necessarily any sign of panic.

Re: Coronavirus

7 new cases in Zurich, 3rd in Basel-Land and a second case announced in Fribourg. Early days yet, but we may well be over 100 cases by Friday. But at least as of today recoveries have reached 50% of those infected worldwide.

Hand sanitizer was bound to run out when the CF told the population to have some to watch hands regularly. Not a panic reaction.

Well I have now 70 rolls of toilet paper in reserve-for the worst case scenario!

What could be worse than wiping ones arse with old newspapers!

I've heard people saying this could turn into a shit storm but I'm not sure you understood the hyperbole.

In any case, please remember that although high grit sandpaper has a smoother feel, low grit has better absorbtion.

They have plenty here. Our local pharmacy has both alcohol and their home produced sanitiser for sale.
