Re: Coronavirus

Sorry not sorry for the stupid joke but public places closing by 23h00 sounds like an extension of opening hours for a lot of restaurants and bars in NE.

Re: Coronavirus

I guess this was kind of inevitable with the low number of cases in the first wave - which pretty much ultimately just pushes the problem down the line.

If things are looking really bad here I might go back to the UK over winter - where I'm from there have been so many cases already I think would be safer there.

Check out the Corona hotspots graphic. Today's conference will be interesting, I wonder if BAG will be updating the quarantine list (by dropping many countries from it as we're worse than they are)....

Isn't it interesting that all we start to get record numbers of new infections during time when we have obligatory masks, compared to the time when masks were discouraged?

Re: Coronavirus

With all these huge increases in numbers I still personally know of less than 10 people who have been infected, including people at work ..

I'm not trying to say the virus is fake here, I don't assume that the government is telling blatant lies.. I just find it a little surprising, nobody in my extended circle of friends, nobody at the gym, none of the neighbours, kids classes at school, kids after school clubs..etc .. Just a handful of people from work who were all fine after a few days. We're out and about completly as usual and never had a blip on the covid app either.

Back in the UK my brother had it, said it was crap for a week, it was so bad in fact that he didn't play the xbox for a few days.

Fatigue has very much set in here with all the numbers and rules.

Has now happened - CDC have redefined close contact as 15 minutes cumulative contact in a 24 hour period rather than 15 minutes continuous.

No-one has ever claimed masks are 100%. If you check back to the sane posts on here you will see the risk is reduced by something like 20% to 30%. Perfectly possible - actually likely - for a single individual to still get infected in such a circumstance. But across a large population you will get 20% to 30% less transmission overall which will have a significant dampening effect of virus spread.
My point was that those masks are the bare minimum of protection (even in hospitals this is the recommended protocol for even screening COVID by staff - a joke IMHO), at the very least people should wear them but FFP2/3 is the safer option

Same here, unlike back in the spring I'm now starting now to have had friends and acquaintances that have caught the virus, all of them have said it's not that bad.

I still don’t know a single person who has been confirmed to have been infected.
I’m really surprised by that.

Yes, but people often confuse correlation with causation. It's most probably, and I admit I haven't ran a regression, a function of end of school autumn holidays and people coming back, colder weather and people staying indoors (as we know, the most common infection scenario is actually at home).

This.

Also, PCR is not a diagnostics tool. Important to keep that in mind.

And one can't help getting a little suspicious - well at least I can't help myself - and wondering where all those "new cases" supposedly suddenly come from.

Given that over a period of 8 months since people started testing for it, just over 1% of the population has ever shown traces of this virus at some point or another (that we know of), it's not really surprising you know few who had it It's hardly "huge numbers". I still know no one, if I exclude myself (had antibodies, never noticed).

Granted the WHO estimates some 760m have had it at some point since its presumed discovery (which I'm sure was much earlier than we think). So similar to the approx. 1 bn that have some traces of influenza every year. Obviously also brings the mortality rate WAY down, and it's already been revised significantly. It certainly seems that by and large, this is no more or less contagious or dangerous for vast majorities of people than other corona- or influenza virus - with the exception that it appears more dangerous for the old and/or immunocompromised than normal strains of the flu tend to be (with the exception of more aggressive strains that occur sporadically every few years), therefore more people seem to need somewhat more care than during other times.

Thank you for sharing your specialised knowledge with us.

What does "the any" mean?
I tried "the many" but that does not fit with "round".
My spell and grammar checker wanted to delete "the" but that also does make sense.

Yeah, and it's like a snowball effect. I know that on October 1st, gatherings of 1,000 or more people were allowed here, with permission. I kept waiting for them to cancel that, but as far as I know, they never did. I guess that's also around the time when the weather started to turn much colder (can't remember). And then I'm sure that people traveling while their kids were on break from school didn't help.

What a mess. I can only hope that whatever new restrictions are announced can help slow down that 'snowball effect.'

About 1% of Switzerland has had a laboratory confirmed case (probably closer to 10% who have had it though). It's not surprising you don't know many people who have had it confirmed.
