I'll go 6 weeks from Thursday, so that everyone heads to the slopes mid-December and the stats are manageable at Christmas.

That's new to me, I've heard they like to wear webbing to "peaceful" protests but that's a touch different.

All these antifa and right wing nuts sides can't be the same as they used to be, they all used to wear masks and now they're protesting them, did they become too mainstream and therefore not enough of a statement nowadays?

Duck nose!
They were all into covering their faces on the football terraces with their flares and crap, then protested against other people wearing face coverings, and now they're protesting being forced to wear face coverings. Logic ain't their strong suit.

I last saw the Ultra mob in Bern in December 2018. I was at the bus stop opposite the station when they came out for their little march and the police turned them right, away from the city centre. I went to a meeting and just got back to the station in time to see them arriving back from their little jaunt around the offices area and a couple of industrial estates, looking all tired and dejected. To top it all off, a little old lady at the bus stop shouted over at them and made the 'tosser' hand gesture

Switzerland risks running out of intensive care beds in 11 days

Switzerland has "no time to lose" and faces another nationwide lockdown since a harder-hitting second wave of infections puts the alpine country in danger of running out of intensive care beds.

“We have no time to lose. There are no alternatives to drastic measures,” the president of the advisory Covid-19 taskforce said on Tuesday, adding that the situation is more serious than in March during the peak of the first wave of the pandemic.

A second nationwide lockdown must be put on the table as a potential response, Martin Ackermann said.

Intensive care beds are at risk of being used up in 11 days' time if the recent rise in coronavirus infections keeps up the pace, the government's scientific advisory group said at a briefing on Tuesday.

The situation in the wealthy alpine state has deteriorated in recent weeks, the advisers said, and called on the Swiss to return to working from home and only travel if absolutely necessary.

Switzerland, a country of 8.5m, on Tuesday reported 5,949 positive Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours.

The governing federal council is due to unveil its decision on tighter restrictions on Wednesday.

Bern has been reluctant to impose harsher unilateral measures. After the first lockdown, politicians were keen to prioritise protecting the economy and remain divided as to how much more intervention is needed.

Since mid-June, it has been left up to cantonal governments to decide on appropriate public health responses.

You are referring to a post with dry statistics, no insight from decision makers. What I posted is a quoted statement from the president of the advisory Covid-19 taskforce and in case you failed to notice, I've pasted the article. In short, your post is offtopic and irrelevant Move on

Re: Coronavirus

Just thought the same, triggered by today's Drosten podcast and what Ackermann said in the presser.

"Circuit breaker"? Would require "extraordinary situation". And is risky. But the alternative (soft package as communicated last week) is as risky, maybe more so because its effect will be so much slower.

Difficult call. Unless you are Ueli Maurer.

Perhaps I spoke too soon, seems now that the southern tip of Sweden now also seeing cases rise. Difference is the people there are just advised to avoid close contact and travelling on public transport.

Personal responsibility?. It's one of the few local cultural features I do like here. In simpler terms, adulting.
This does seem to be more of a factor this time around, that people are just now taking as much personal responsibility. We know that the lockdown in March wasn't really required as the R rate of infection was already well on the way down before lockdown was imposed. Furthermore, we now know that the Covid infection-to-death timescale is around 4 weeks, so with deaths in Switzerland peaking around 4th April we know that the infection rate peaked before lockdown was imposed. This points to people's behaviour more than anything causing the reduction in the rate of infection.

From the language used at the press conference today, it sounds like the BAG taskforce aren't convinced people are as cautious at the moment as they were in March. A case of Covid fatigue? Who knows, I just hope they don't now impose a stricter lockdown as a result!

Trump's fans will believe anything
Quote:
The White House science office listed "ending the COVID-19 pandemic" as the top accomplishment of President Trump's first term, even as the U.S. has set records for new daily infections and numerous hospitals across the country are stretched to their breaking points.

The rosy outlook in their press release flies in the face of reality, and underscores the efforts of Trump to continuously try to downplay the severity of the pandemic that continues to rage nearly uncontrolled across the country.
Source

It contrasts with White House chief of staff Mark Meadows who said two days ago the country is not going to control the virus.

Re: Coronavirus

Okay, advice needed. Our chimney sweep came to the house yesterday to arrange to do his annual check of the boiler today. He called me a little while ago to say he couldn't come because he got a phone call last night to say he has to go into quarantine. Does that mean we need to as well? He kept his distance although he wasn't wearing a mask. Checked the FOPH site, but not really clear if we need to quarantine as well or not.

From what I’ve been reading in the Swiss papers, it seems like there isn’t going to be anything close to a lockdown.
