Did people Wuhan travel out for skiing and European Xmas markets, maybe? It is not such a far fetched theory. Wuhan is huge and only confined later.

Does anyone know if it's possible to watch today's press conference / announcements (scheduled for 14:00, I believe) where what is being said is automatically translated into English?
Just come here, wait you are already here

If immunity is short and people reinfect, what would change to know whether you had it last Dec or not, though. Not much. It just means we have to stick to hygiene and social distancing, no matter what.
True, just being curious

No, but I did spend a lot of time at ZH airport, people watching and chatting up female Chinese tourists.

It's not instant, and it's not word-for-word, but summaries are usually added nearly in real-time to this thread:

if you have a twitter account @CoronaEnglish does a lot of translating and tweeting for Switzerland. It's a guy who tries to keep English speakers up to date.

Re: Coronavirus

I usually have the TV on the press conference, and flip back and forth on my laptop between: https://twitter.com/CoronaEnglish, the 20min.ch ticker (with auto google translate) - they are fastest, and another newspaper that has a ticker going, sometimes tagesanzeiger.ch - I think nau.ch and blick.ch are a bit tabloidy (??) but other swiss ones don't always have a live-blog-esque feed going. I have zero clue about liberal vs conservative papers here I am sorry to say so please don't infer anything from my choices

Between the three and my limited french/german I can get the gist of things relatively quickly.

You do not have to worry about that much here, it's either good or bad reporting/journalism here, not the lib/conservative cliche as elsewhere. I think.

Thanks! I don't do social media sites like Twitter and FB, but that's right -- I do remember hearing about that Twitter page before. And thankfully, it looks like I can see it even without having a Twitter account.

Thanks again.

I always do my best to keep distance while for example waiting in line at the cashier. However on more than one occasion the ppl behind me were not. Astonishingly 90% of those were ppl well above 60. The ones we are suppose to protect extra, it is somewhat difficult to do if they themselves dont seem to respect distancing....
Yes! Absolutely! I was in Migros on Saturday early AM and it was packed with the 60plus crowd. One couple backed into me and didn't even apologize or stop backing into me. At the checkout, I had to politely tell the lady behind me to go back to her line on the floor as she tried to reach in front of my face to hand something to the cashier. She looked at me like I was nuts... they really don't care for the most part.

Whether herd immunity is possible or not is largely irrelevant. What's important is that the scientific debate should continue until it is "proven" in either way. Same goes for masks. Some scientific publications seem to have already made up their mind on the matter though. This research does seem to echo similar findings made in the slums of Mumbai though where it is theorized that herd immunity has been achieved.
Of course, untraceable rumours from India are much more credible and convincing than peer-reviewed scientific studies in eminent journals.

I must confess I do look forward to your posts as you are one of the most amusing posters here.

Re: Coronavirus

It looks like today's press conference is scheduled for later today rather than 14:00 as we had thought. I just checked on that #EnglishCorona Twitter page and he just tweeted the following:

English Coronavirus updates for Switzerland
@CoronaEnglish
·
False alarm: The conference about the Covid-situation is later. Last time i heard: 16:00. I will keep you posted.

One question... I work in an office. We all know the recommendation to work from home. This would be possible but the boss doesnt want that. Now he wants us to wear masks in the office. Can he do that?

They touch a million things and are unmasked! I stay well clear of those little critters

Btw, I read the Lancet link you posted regarding China, and I am still not clear on how China is controlling the numbers so well. That Lancet article seems like an info commercial for China

I find it hard to believe that a country of billion plus has hardly any new cases, specially as herd immunity apparently is not working that well against Corona.

One of the biggest things I learned from this crisis is how the west sold out their manufacturing base to China. Can't even buy non-Chinese masks!!!
The Chinese government tests everybody for free if needed, not only symptomatic cases. This is how you stop a pandemic, not by trying to save every single miserable penny. In Kashgar they tested almost 5 million people in a few days...

It's basically the opposite of Switzerland, where I bet if the government would pay for free tests for everybody, you'd have then some so-called 'libertarian' protesting that they are using 'their' taxpayer money irresponsibly (they'd let people die on the street to keep their ideological totem of the debt/GDP ratio low).

Yes, he can tell you to come to work and yes, he can tell you to wear a mask.

Working from home is a recommendation and legally your employer can say no to that.

Perhaps stopping a pandemic would have been not allowing one to happen in the first place...

Who trusts anything coming out of China??

In the same boat, we now have to wear masks unless we are at our own desks or sitting down for food/drink.
Nobody has complained about it seriously yet, us glasses wearers are not enjoying blindly fumbling about to get to our desks but it's not the worst.

We'll see if this all changes again this evening and they only keep the workshop people in the building.

The Press Conference of the Federal Council (Bundesrat) is currently scheduled around 16:00-ish, as they are still deliberating about the measures.

You can watch the original stream on their Youtube-Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/DerSchweiz...vizzero/videos

Although no English subs or translation, sorry bout that :/

Like home office for office people? I mean... i dont like masks to be honest. They are not as good as they say and the office will shut down if anyone gets the virus. Its even worse for the boss, but hey, its his office.
