As you know, I sell high end cheese, beer, wine and other food products and over the last 3 weeks sales are up. Many (mostly Swiss) customers have told me they are not going to restaurants so are spending money on good food and drink to enjoy at home instead.

Also - from the way I read it it, Switzerland is open for business from a travel perspective.. only these places will have to qurantine.

Areas of neighbouring countries

France:

Region Hauts-de-France
Region Île de France
Overseas area French Polynesia

Countries and areas*
Andorra
Armenia
Belgium
Czech Republic
Official Link

So - I'm still trying to wrap my head around that.
It never made sense to begin with seeing that they found what, 3 folks with a positive test out of thousands that were in quarantine post some travel to a "high risk" country - which mind you was an arbitrary categorization from the get-go.

And it certainly makes no sense at all anymore, so good for them to abandon it.

A circuit breaker "lockdown" in affected cantons for 2 weeks so the hospital situation can regain control. By "lockdown", I mean what we had in Spring...not like what you see in Spain and certain parts of France.

There is absolutely nothing I see in these measures today that will change anything besides clubs closing and university courses being conducted remotely. But we have moved past the young people being the main driver of this virus...
I doubt that would have anywhere near the effect you'd be hoping for in 2 weeks. In a very short time you'd be back in exactly the same situation It would be better to shut gyms and bars for the length of the winter to attempt to control R properly than engaging in more lockdown.

Ireland went for 6 weeks. That will probably work but the economy will be ****ed

Mask wearing is one measure that doesn't help. Like everyone I have adjusted my behaviour and have managed to avoid catching (and spreading) the virus so far, so I must be doing something right!

Good points...who knows, it is a difficult situation. I think we all have to accept that life won't be the same for awhile and might also be very sad with a lot of different types of losses. Time for a glass of wine...

I’ve got a practical question. I have tickets for a play on Saturday evening. Considering the new rules, is it cancelled or not?

If we really repeated what we did back in march, numbers would go down.
Mr. Berset just answered that a min ago, winter will be long and we cannot repeatedly close on and off for two weeks each time.

Quote:
This new set of rules is by far not as strict as the one in march. Besides, people are tired of it and compliance detoriates.
If that is the case, why do you think that stricter measures would improve compliance. Reinforcing it would not make people less tired, anxious or careful.

My friends in SF have finally deconfined a little after 3 months. I am worried about CA confining again in 2 months, when it shows up again because businesses want to catch up and people recharge social energy.

I suppose it's cancelled, but you should call tomorrow to be sure.

Quite. A crappy immune response to natural infection is a pretty good indication that vaccination will be difficult or impossible. As observed in AIDS.

Thus if Marton is correct that protection is weak and short lived then we will most likely not have a particularly efficacious vaccine. I would posit that its somewhat stronger than he presumes for most people.
I did not posit "protection is weak and short lived", I posted the effectiveness is not known.

You then posted a link that you claimed said the T cells are effective when your link actually stated "T-cells from recovered COVID-19 patients show promise to protect vulnerable patients from infection".
"Show promise" is not the same as "T cells are effective"

Re: Coronavirus

Is there any financial help for employees in todays announcement ??

Any restrictions on employers firing people???

Blick.ch below

Does anyone know what this means "The Federal Council is expanding the short-time work a bit: employees on call also have a retroactive claim if they are employed on an unlimited basis.
"

I’ve been rereading the announcements again and again, and I’m not at all sure. Is a theatre a public manifestation? The devil is in the details...

The list of the few places that have shittier numbers than Switzerland.
Guess I can consider that trip to the States! With no need to quarantine on the way back (currently 106 cases per 10k at my destination). Common sense says numbers are numbers after all!

It is, theatres were on the top list of activities that were banned during lockdown. I felt very sorry for the actors and artists in general.

But you're right, now I'm not sure of anything...

Whereas in the real world
Vanderbilt University Study published yesterday shows US counties without mask mandates have much higher hospitalizations.

Source

Of course, I agree with the other precautions we can take are necessary and important, especially social distancing

No.

Hell no.

Seems to apply to persons that do not work regular hours but are on call, i.e. called in when needed. They will also be eligible to "Kurzarbeit".

I visited family in SF this summer. Quarantined for 12 days before seeing them, lockdown was tight. No playgrounds, takeout only, public gatherings in parks still happening, weed still delivered aka essential services but the city was really quiet and numbers low. The numbers look good in the Bay area and restrictions have been lighter for the past month. Blame the flatlanders and LA for most of the new cases! They never got it together.

Re: Coronavirus

I would be interested in hearing an overall opinion from healthcare workers about the new restrictions -- particularly from the ones who are working in ICU wards and seeing the ICU beds becoming filled up and the patients struggling on ventilators, etc. I think their opinions are the ones that I most respect, to be honest. Because I think they have a more realistic understanding of the situation.

Re: Coronavirus

So does this mean that gyms stay open and offices open normally?
At least based on what I see and hear in Zurich, there are many companies that have decided to ignore the home office recommendation since its only a recommendation also for employees who could easily work from home.

Streets look also as busy as usual and restaurants full.
