I visited family in SF this summer. Quarantined for 12 days before seeing them, lockdown was tight. No playgrounds, takeout only, public gatherings in parks still happening, weed still delivered aka essential services but the city was really quiet and numbers low. The numbers look good in the Bay area and restrictions have been lighter for the past month. Blame the flatlanders and LA for most of the new cases! They never got it together.
Doesn't surprise me. Yeah, I got the ghost town SF photos....especially scary when all orange/pink/gray from the fires. I think SF did well also because it is organized and mega career focused/disciplined. Or I don't know, better leadership. LA is less wealthy, less organized, and I wouldn't say disciplined. Something just works in SF and not really elsewhere in Cali, some kind of forward thinking.

I would be interested in hearing an overall opinion from healthcare workers about the new restrictions -- particularly from the ones who are working in ICU wards and seeing the ICU beds becoming filled up and the patients struggling on ventilators, etc. I think their opinions are the ones that I most respect, to be honest. Because I think they have a more realistic understanding of the situation.

There's a protest this week from them. They want an extra month of salary to compensate all the extra hours.

The headline is quite informative: Health workers want to hear more than warm applause https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/health-...ause-/46121266

Government employees who protest, they have safe salaries that will always be paid. They don't know how lucky they are.

Well, there's an overtime and payment law. The law is not useful when people work more than 50 hours a week, because it's forbidden https://www.ch.ch/en/overtime-and-extra-hours/

Re: Coronavirus

I saw an article a few days ago about some healthcare workers in Belgium being asked to continue working even though they have tested positive for COVID, due to a shortage of healthcare workers there.

The outbreak is so bad in Belgium, some Covid-positive health workers are being asked to keep working

Normally I'd agree with you, but dealing with constant misery and death in the front line for months on end.... a month of salary for all this doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Switzerland can afford it. When its over. Not now.

I must be going soft in my old age

I bet you would be thrilled to work 50 hours a week in hazmat in a physically hard and emotionally demanding job. To then hear comments like this.

Any ideas what the new regs mean for the swimming pools in Zurich? On the website it just says that from tomorrow new capacity limits have to be introduced...

The fact their economy is based on tech is more than a little helpful. They are still in line for a Czech Republicing unless they are very, very careful.

Some people think money just magically appear on their bank accounts at the end of the month, working or not.

For us self employed it's a different story

I know someone who works in a nursing home in Switzerland, who has been instructed (not asked) the same.

Re: Coronavirus

So they German approach now is a semi-lockdown with the ambition to reclaim territory before Christmas. Quite the opposite to Switzerland.

- restaurants etc closed
- gyms etc closed
- touristic overnight stays banned
- only individual sports
- max 10 people from max two households allowed to meet

Until end of Nov.

Let us see who is right.

Re: Coronavirus

Lockdown light in France .. Similar to Germany ..

Schools open, building sites, factories etc.. But restrictions on travel and leaving home etc..

Not as tough as i thought it would be.

Re: Coronavirus

Interesting speech by French president, the tone of voice and delivery made me expect to lockdown till at least spring break next year..and then: schools, travel, businesses open, interior travel banned, zero social life, especially within family. I cannot picture French teachers' unions to be happy to be exposed, taking care of teaching live while supervising many students in quarantine. There are classes of more than 40 children. I hope they have a good system in place, new measures effective on Friday.
