Do they offer take away food? Could be an explanation as to why they are open.
Nope...purely pubs/bars with some offering no food at all, ever. One of my friends owns a beer pub and they closed the day the announcement was made only to be told on Monday they could open up without explanation. (The communication has been very poor.)

I am wondering if they can stay open by only offering beer/wine? As a cocktail bar nearby I saw was advertising cocktail delivery service since they were indeed closed.

Isn’t red festive enough for you?
I love it.. But we're expecting this to be all over by Christmas no?

We'll need to scale down the alert, maybe a purple and silver would be nice? They could replace the classic image of the virus with a snowflake, to remind us to keep our distance whilst skiing.

Judging by the colour scheme and its varying implementation throughout the country, I suggest they keep the red and put green stripes through it.

Preliminary results for the Pfizer/Bio-N-Tech vaccine look positive. Still more testing and distribution hurdles (storage of the vaccine requires super low temperatures). For those who follow this stuff, markets are happy.

https://www.statnews.com/2020/11/09/...rial-indicate/

In other news, Biden has announced a very experienced team to lead his corona virus advisory panel.
Yep, preliminary but promising. The storage is odd at -80C, and only 5 days apparently. Vaccines usually are fine in -60C and RNA samples (This vaccine is RNA based) even at higher temps (-20C)

I read the Oxford group is also looking at mRNA based solution and also limited by the refrigeration - although they seem to believe they can improve on that but not for a number of years

I read the Germans are planning a national system of vaccination centres to cope with this. Also seems Pfizer are looking if it can be kept at +4° for up to 5 days.

Anyway fantastic news, makes keeping the numbers down for the next few months even more important as there is now an end in sight.

The UK have ordered 20million doses and plan to start in early December. I do hope someone in Switzerland remembered to order some for us...

My god. Is the UK actually ahead of the game - that'd be a turn up for the books!

I don't think it will long until we get the results from the other vaccine candidates now.

They did. Something like 3 or 4 million doses IIRC. I think we ordered the Pfizer vaccine before the UK. The UK however ordered the Astra-Zenica vaccine before us. Also IIRC there is a trans-Europe distribution system organised that Switzerland is part of.

Have read of a couple of dampers on the news. Seems there is nothing on the age profile of the trial - so at the moment no confirmation it will work on older people (although if enough younger people get vaccinated then no problem as herd immunity takes care of the rest...but a big if). Also no indication on how long protection lasts, also nothing on the sevitiry of the infections people got.

They're not there yet....but getting ever closer.

Edit - was wrong, it's Moderna the Swiss ordered, not Pfizer. Unfortunately.

comparing how things are done in different countries is fine by me. Be it on education, the law, governement, health, and so much more. Fascinating and truly interesting- alwyas has been for me. But you have to make it clear in the discussion, or correct later if and when necessary.
That actually happened. Yet posters can't stop their arrogant lecturing.

The meme was very well placed and apt.

Re: Coronavirus

A bit difficult to read, but this is R (cases, the purple line) over time according to the Task Force analysis. I left the bit on the measures so you can see the timeframe below.

End of October, R was down to around 1 - which seems lower than what had been communicated in the news, if I recall correctly. That would explain the stagnating case numbers we see now. R seems to be flattening, but not dropping below 1 yet. Note that in spring, R was as low as 0.6.

Interesting is also the weird September dent which to me is without explanation.

You probably need to take the rate of positive tests into account, too.

With up to 30% positives there was bound to be a significant number of unknown positives, so the real number of infections was probably higher, and R as a consequence.

As of today the rate of positive tests is back down to 11%, which may in turn mean that the "real" reproduction rate has fallen more than measured. Of course "by how much" is the big unknown. This is the rate for the entire 245k tests so far. Sorry.

Last edited by Urs Max; 09.11.2020 at 18:06. Reason: Added the strikethrough, that rate is pretty much irrelevant.

Good point. But today's rate was 23%, right?

Re: Coronavirus

"The first effective coronavirus vaccine can prevent more than 90% of people from getting Covid-19, a preliminary analysis shows.

The developers - Pfizer and BioNTech - described it as a "great day for science and humanity".

Their vaccine has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries and no safety concerns have been raised.

The companies plan to apply for emergency approval to use the vaccine by the end of the month.

No vaccine has gone from the drawing board to being proven highly effective in such a short period of time.

There are still huge challenges ahead, but the announcement has been warmly welcomed with scientists describing themselves smiling "ear to ear" and some suggesting life could be back to normal by spring.

"I am probably the first guy to say that, but I will say that with some confidence," said Sir John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University."
