Re: Coronavirus

Just to add a bit of levity to this thread, a friend just sent me this very humorous video on Switzerland and corona:

It would be interesting if researchers take a dive in medical records in Europe of December 2019 to see if there were a large number of pneumonia cases. If yes, the public health system failed at detecting the problem. If not, the hunt for covid19 in old swabs with covid19 tests is useless. Tests are like fishing nets, the SARS test gave positive results for covid19 patients. The covid19 can give positive to other virus.
This is fairly old news but the virus has been detected in wastewater samples from Torino and Milano taken in mid-December, though not in those from mid-November.

On the NHS website, you can sign up for Covid vaccine trials. Is there any such thing here?

Must be that they have recieved the rapid tests.
Yeah, I think you're right... I did see that they're only doing rapid tests at that site.

I wonder if rapid tests are known to often result in false negatives, compared to regular tests. I'm thinking of going there for a test tomorrow. My son had tested negative with his rapid test a few days ago, but I still have this cold. I just want (need) to know whether or not I have that virus.

I'd looked on there, but non of the trials seemed to be vaccine trials, only treatment trials. I thought they'd be begging for vaccine participants.

From what I understand the Rapid tests are less sensitive.
If you feel worried just go and get one

AFAIK there are no covid vaccine trials happening in Switzerland. With hindsight a shame as we would have been perfect.

New cases are down since the peak 2 weeks ago. I guess this week will be the peak of deaths. I'd feel worried, but every time I see the population at risk in large groups, very close and without a mask, the worry is gone.

Also, bonus points for the elderly lady that jumped between my wife and me while rubbing my arm at coop to grab a yogurt. She could not wait 10 seconds while I reached for a pack and put it on the cart. If they don't care for themselves, no public policy will save them. Maybe I need to wear a t-shirt telling I'm still going to the office and the gym and my wife one that tells I work with large groups of children every day.
Of course it would have been different if some sexy young thing grabbed at your yoghurt. Then you would have excused yourself for getting in the way. Instead you blame the elderly for all your problems!

Really? I'd say consensus is now in the 0.2 to 0.5 range. It was higher in the early days with bad treatment.

TBH I would say that 0.7% is not consistent with quite a few pieces of data. For instance, Israel has had 324,293 diagnosed cases and 2,732 deaths.

Now thats pretty close to your 0.7%. Meaning your 0.7% could only be correct if there were next to no missed cases - which is not credible with this disease where we know that many cases are asymptomatic.

I attended an online talk given by a Harvard epidemiologist - his figures are 0.19% for whites, and about double that for non-whites.

The highest testing nations per capita are Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands. Gibraltar has had 907 cases and 1 death. Faroe Islands 498 cases and no deaths. Is that really consistent with a 0.7% death ratio? You'd expect around 10 deaths in the two countries combined if it were.

What you don't want to see is the measly 4.7% increase of hospitalizations for the November 2016-2018 compared to November 2020 period which certainly does not grant the hysteria and restrictions placed on health care, schooling, travel, business and normal life for majority of people

So Switzerland has almost the same mortality rate as a poor country like India

In the UK news, Sage advisers used Wikipedia entries to model first Covid lockdown.

I haven’t seen any evidence of hysteria anywhere. Concern, yes. Restrictions, yes. Hysteria, no.

As for those figures I guess that depends on where you live.
The 4.7% increase is across the whole country some areas are better and some are much worse.
It’s the same in Switzerland and the restrictions are toughest in the hardest hit areas which makes sense to me, I think the approach is the same in the US. Some places will barely notice any difference.

What you do not see is that firstly they cannot use more hospital beds than exist and secondly they cut down on non-urgent uses to make more room for the COVID patients.

In Switzerland drug companies pay you for many drug trials.

Life expectancy in India is 69 v 84, Swiss death rate of 69 year olds & below is way lower in CH
