Re: Coronavirus

For those that like to look at charts and graphs, and want a bit more detailed info on cases, this site has plenty of info. On some charts you can switch between linear and logarithmic, if you're so inclined:

Do you have a source for "are proven to reduce chances of catching the virus"?

About "ideally 1 mask per day for every person", the World Health Authority recommends changing masks when they get damp which translates to several times per day.
Here’s an article by HK university of science and technology

Wear a mask

Coronaviruses themselves do not have the ability to move, and their movement is generally spread by air droplets.

Hong Kong Consumer Council’s testing of mask performance is based on the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Staphylococcus aureus solution is atomized into particles with a size of about 3 microns for bacterial filtration efficiency testing. The first level standard of surgical mask can block more than 95% of Staphylococcus aureus, and the higher the level, the better the barrier performance. When we talk or sneeze, the air droplets that we make is generally 5 microns or larger, so surgical masks should be able to block more than 95% of virus carried by air droplets.

https://stem.ust.hk/en/how-to-reduce...han-pneumonia/

My lab friends also said, even if the “holes” in the filter of regular surgical masks are bigger than the size of the virus, the virus move in a zigzag path, so the masks do catch some of them.

Yep, great site.

(It's a shame we don't have an OP with some of these links and some general neutral info)

I expected Germany to make a jump today, but this big jump is amazing. Think it will be busy in German supermarkets tomorrow.

(n95 being US equivalent to ffp3)
Of course there are also even more effective masks out there and one might be unlucky and get sick regardless but if ffp3 masks are good enough for medical staff, they are good enough for me.

Agree should have been more precise on 1 mask per day as it naturally depends how long time person is spending on area on which contamination is possible. For example wearing a mask at home or walking outside (unless in very growded area) would most likely not make much sense.

Looks like you did! I'm sure I saw the post and scrolled right past it at the time, because I didn't have time to get sucked into a website with pretty charts and stuff at that moment.

Credit to you for posting first.

Edwin, I'll see if I can dig through this giant thread sometime in the near future and add a more links to the OP (which was made by terrifisch).

They're sprinkled throughout the thread along with others, though.

I think Edwin's point was to add them to the OP so that anyone can click the first page and see helpful links in the first post. I'm not sure you can edit your original post any more, thus my offer to go through (not tonight) and add some links.

If you have a handy list of sites you've posted, PM me and I can add them to the first post of the thread.

That's a convenient defense for Edwin...I am not inclined to agree!

No, those'd be the medical students who'd get pressed into duty. At least retired staff have decades of experience and more likely to be a lot more useful.

I have to admit that on this occasion I do agree with Edwin.
If all the links were in the original post so that they were easy to find it would make life a lot easier for everyone.

The thread has got very long and it’s a bit painful having to scroll through loads of posts to find the links.

What don't you agree with?

As I read it, Edwin's post simply said it would be good to have helpful, neutral links in the OP - as in the first post, not the person who started the thread. I did not read it as any sort of statement about you.

Do you not agree that it would be nice to have many helpful links in the first post where people can easily find them?

Or what else did I miss trying to keep up with in this thread?

OP means many things, in this case it clearly means Original Post.

But hey thanks for the bad rep, groan and PM in which you call me an ass multiple times due to your inability to understand what you read.

Which is why it would be handy if a mod/admin would add them to the OP which is what I was referring to/asking for.
