What's the point in doing anything now? Looking around Europe it's clear that tiers don't work, with Christmas 9 days away, there's little point in implementing anything at the moment as there will almost certainly be a relaxation over Christmas anyway. Numbers are flat so let's just carry on without damaging the economy during some of the most important weeks of the year.

Hello Tony, more holidays???!!!!

But how? Holidays bring people together, and it has already been determined that private gatherings are where individuals contract the virus the most. There will be a lot of movement around the cantons.

Best to bring the numbers down considerably before people expose themselves to family members...

I suppose the thinking is that doing something now would lessen the next wave from being larger then it otherwise would be by doing nothing.

My take is that many are getting fatigued with the restrictions since the rates have plateaued and dropping, IMO, sensible measures like wearing a mask, washing hands and keeping appropriate distance magnified by frustration with the piecemeal, pass-the-buck and sometimes illogical approaches from governmental authorities.

Add to this the desire to see family and friends for Christmas, the economic impact of close / open / partially closing businesses and we have a recipe for confusion and anger.

Of course, difficult to run a real-world multivariate test on this.

But how?
By simply not following the rules. Imposing serious restrictions for Christmas will simply not work as families WILL gather together irrelevant of restrictions. People know that they can be banned from the markets, shopping areas and ski areas, but the government neither has the resources, nor the willingness to go around, count number of people around a Christmas table and arrest a few of them. It simply won't work.

Re: Coronavirus

We’re going to have to put up with restrictions, etc until enough people have taken the vaccination to significantly bring down the infection rates. For those who greatly fear infection, I suggest online shopping and reducing any contact with people to a minimum until you can get the vaccine.

And all of that could be avoided for the most part if BAG made home office mandatory and not just a "recommendation".
Some of us cannot do home office most of the time.

You can only do home office if you normally work in an office.

A zoo-keeper probably couldn't do home office and nor could an airline pilot.

Re: Coronavirus

Summary of todays taskforce press conference

The experts are calling for further political measures. Martin Ackermann from the Covid Task Force speaks of extensive closings and recalls the lockdown in March and April.

The experts also emphasize that the situation will continue to get worse in the next few days. Patrick Mathys from the BAG speaks of a possible doubling of the current corona numbers within 30 days. Ackermann says that the virus does not know any canton borders. "The coming holidays, increased mobility and the cold weather carry a high risk that the situation will deteriorate further."

The surrounding countries were also mentioned. According to Mathys from the BAG, Switzerland is not a prime example. Mathys emphasizes that the surrounding countries have already taken strong measures. If Switzerland does not react, Switzerland will continue to set itself apart in a negative sense.

It is remarkable how many people are working in home office when you thought they could not before. I can't pay my bloody bills on the phone anymore since most customer service people are working from home and aren't securely able to take your credit card info. It is a real inconvenience...but I would rather them be safe.

50 percent of my office is going in just because they want to - I understand, I miss going in now and then too - but unless they make it mandatory for just a few short weeks, we will continue to be in the same situation we are because people just keep on doing whatever the hell they want to do. There is no predominant self responsibility in this society anymore...

I feel your frustration but even though a lockdown may be bring a reduction in infection rates short term, the truth is that we'll be having these waves until enough people get vaccinated. I see no other logical conclusion.

I agree - but I believe now is the time we could actually do it. Shouldn't we be vaccinated by early Spring? At least the ones who are at risk? Before we knew how effective the vaccine was or if there would even be one in the near future, I could understand this philosophy.

Though there will be certainly waves, I was hoping that there will be a few week gap between them and the number at the bottom would be way lower than the current one. The medical staffs could get a bit of rest and spend with their small families. But now, it's too late. They should have kept strict measures till this week.

Let's see. The 7-day rolling average is still up 10% week-on-week. But yes, especially the only 10% positivity today looked "good".

Currently, it is not definitely known if vaccinated people could be virus carriers or not
