It starts an important discussion. Who needs a surgery more? Someone who needs it from long ago, already waited several weeks, even months, in Valais due to the 2nd wave, or someone who was perfectly healthy?

I only hope no hospital manager/doctor has to face that question.

I think putting ski accidents at the end of the ER queue should resolve the issue of closing the ski resorts (or not).

I have one colleague who has his family in London - he travels every weekend to see them and comes back to Zurich on Monday and straight into the office. It is infuriating ... I know he pays zero attention to lockdown rules while he does it.

I hope you reported him to the relevant authority...

This is something which you could (should?) report at least internally as it exposes not only you to Covid, but actually the company. If internally you (corporate "you", not Susie "you") know he's been doing this and not warned him, this won't be seen too nice by the authorities. Quarantine is a must and it's not a matter of personal choice.
I guess not that fast......if this person has effectively violated quarantine several times, managers above already know and it's probable they tacitly agree with this behavior. Reporting internally will not be good for her professional career.

We need aSwissInTheUS to clarify, but I guess there's no legal duty to report quarantine violations to the police. A moral duty yes, but legal? So, no consequences for not doing anything. Again, I don't know much about CH but the few exceptions are laws that state explicitly the duty to report to authorities a crime, for example a bank reporting something that looks like money laundering.

The two paragraphs above are not a justification to do nothing, but act intelligently instead. So, Susie-Q find a way to denounce this without getting in trouble.

New Mutated Strain of Novel Coronavirus Found in England; Will It Render Vaccines Ineffective?
Scientists are investigating a new strain of SARS-CoV-2 that has infected over 1,000 people in South England, posing a risk to undergoing vaccine distribution
I hope their borders are closed (?). (I guess I'm not sure if that's part of 'strict lockdown,' there).

This strain is apparently more contagious though.
Yeah, I just researched it a bit and it does appear to be a mutation with more spikes, thus causing this strain to be more easily contagious / transmissible, though it's still being researched.

"The new variant, which UK scientists have named “VUI – 202012/01” includes a mutation in the viral genome region encoding the spike protein, which - in theory - could result in COVID-19 spreading more easily between people.

The British government on Monday cited a rise in new infections, which it said may be partly linked to the new variant, as it moved its capital city and many other areas into the highest tier of COVID-19 restrictions."

Some countries have 24/72 hour rules. If you spend less time than that in that country you do not need to quarantine.

I have similar colleagues.....

International commuters are exempt from UK quarantine as long as the travel frequency is at least once a week. So he's not doing anything wrong that end.

Re: Coronavirus

Reckon there's going to be a pretty significant increase in restrictions in the Friday anno9unement. Swiss TV news today was full of centre-right politicians finally admitting they got it very badly wrong. Or at least as near as a Swiss politician will ever get to admitting they got it badly wrong.

Even my canton who have so far completely resisted doing anything at all have finally admitted failure.

We're probably looking at the closure of restaurants and sports centres from this weekend.

On his visit to Neuchâtel yesterday Alain Berset said they were trying to avoid a complete lockdown if possible and their aim is to get the R number down to 0.8. He said stricter measures are likely in the coming weeks but wouldn’t say if they were likely to be this Friday.

No, they would not care, it is Zurich - he did travel back when UK was on the list for CH and work said nothing. The only person that would be screwed over would be me sadly...

Venting on EF I guess is enough.

Re: Coronavirus

I think the Swiss authorities should have done more, in terms of restrictions, last October, to get those #'s down so that perhaps people could more safely enjoy their holidays this year and, hopefully, to avoid another lockdown with most businesses closed, etc. They seem to be resorting to "wishful thinking" rather than using more realistic foresight... at least here in the German part.

Also, if indeed a new strain has emerged that is more infectious (as appears to be the case in the UK right now), I think they should consider closing the borders again if they don't want that to spread.

It's just all such a shame this is happening around the holidays. I remember the first diagnosed case in Switzerland came right when people were returning from "Winter sports holidays" last February. So now Germany is on lockdown for Christmas and yet the borders are still open (as far as I know). I wonder how many Germans are now coming over into CH to do shopping since most stores are closed there (e.g. home improvement stores, Xmas shopping, etc.).

So far, US coronavirus deaths are about half of excess deaths this year, so you can easily double the 3.5k number.
Then you have to put things in perspective: the excess deaths among whites are 12%, 53.6% among Hispanic and 33% among blacks. Also, among whites mostly the elderly die, while among other ethnicities also younger people die.

I think this helps to understand why a large part of the US society opposes measures to slow down the epidemic. It is not them.
