Re: Coronavirus

Yes, best to close it off - but one week too late- the damage is done. People went partying and shopping like crazy before leaving for home all over the UK ... perfect spreading conditions. When I think Johnson mocked and derided Starmer in the HoC just a week ago - pointing to him and laughing saying 'this man wants to cancel your Christmas' - what a bleeding idiot.

Or as the headline says 'Christmas cancelled by surging mutant virus' (with the photo of Johnson).

Boris and Trump remind me so much of each other.

I'm not from the UK, but whenever I see photos of Boris Johnson in the news, I find myself thinking about how much he looks like he belongs on that show "To Catch a Predator."

You forgot to mention Dominic Cummings.

The new strain of the virus was first identified in early October from samples taken in September.
So it's waaaay too late now.

Re: Coronavirus

I am getting lost with covid measures in Zurich. 1 week ago rule was all the places including gyms, restaurants and shops to close at 7 except takeaway open until 10 except for Sunday when everything was supposed to be closed. Now interestingly enough, there seems to be multiple restaurants open again today some advertising being open until 8.

Got myself some takeaway lunch at 11 believing it would have been still empty but that restaurant was already packed by people above 70...

Another madness is travel, what sense does it make that there is rule how many household members can meet if and when holiday travel to other countries is not limited at all. Large number of expats I know decided to travel home for Christmas and pictures for airport show it was almost as busy as last year.

Last but not least the rule of having grocery stores to close earlier forcing more people to go there at same time is possibly most idiotic and counterproductive rule so far. Let them be open 24/7 if you dont want them to be contribute to spread of the virus and only allow handful of people in simultaniously.

Has the fun loving Boris Johnson turned into a Covid Puritan and banned Christmas ? we look back
at the last time Christmas was banned in England.

Cromwell and the Puritans ban Christmas celebrations

Christmas is effectively cancelled for a lot of people in the UK.

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-55376873
Yep. Lots of very unhappy people. Particularly those who've basically been in lockdown since March apart from around 3 weeks in Sept.

On Andrew Marr this morning, Matt Hancock said he found out about the new strain last Friday - but the WHO knew about it from last September !?!?!?
Yep. And before if the rumours are to be believed. But they waited until the majority of the schools were closed for Christmas. And don't start me on the proposed school based covid testing centres Gavin Williamson sent info on. With no warning. Absolute mess,

Not sure where this partying has been happening? Most of UK in tier 3 already.

Johnson is a lying buffoon with the management skills of a deflated balloon. What he did yesterday after saying it was ok only three days before was cruel.

Friends reporting massive queues at Eurostar in Folkestone- all trying to get out of UK in time to go skiing in Switzerland and visit France, etc.

Well I was previously lambasted for saying people should act within the spirit of the law, not the letter of the law, and not come here on holiday.
The people are acting within the law, and I agree, it's ludicrous.

My (affluent) street has over 50% of the usual parked cars missing. They'll be off to their apartments in the ski resorts.

So some of the Swiss haven't changed their usual habits either.

Just watched the Eurostar video posted on tube from today.
Not a ski jacket or snowboard in sight. Could well be just the EU workers trying to get home.

My wife was doing some shopping in Seedammcenter yesterday and said it was very quiet. Today we went for a walk close to Sihlsee and I was surprised how few cars were coming back from Hoch-Ybrig mid afternoon.

Maybe they are all in Davos

Most hire kit when they get to location, and do not wear their ski clothes to travel.

Oddly not that many Zurchers seem to be here (Klosters), Brits and Dutch it would seem.

Re: Coronavirus

UK R estimates by region, 18 Dec. Would these already be affected by the newly detected strain? R estimates typically relate to data from a week ago, but then if this new strain has already spread so widely, it must have been around for a while?

I think you are wrong. Even Sky news was there and they quote François from Paris trying to get home, not 'Tarquin from Chelsea' trying to get to Verbier.
This is the EU workforce bailing out before they are unable to.

In terms of spreading the new strain, what is the difference whether it is people leaving the UK to ski or to go home?

No difference I'd imagine.

Re: Coronavirus

indeed imagine it is a mix. I am in a ski group and many were talking about rushing off to beat the ban.

And that means all freight too- so all the agricultural and fish produce, etc, that were due to be exported for the French market will not get there ...

Fish was always going to be trouble, shell fish even more.

Yep - anytime I walk by restaurants and cafes, they are crowded with the 70+ age group. Makes me want to shrug my shoulders and give up - what are they thinking?

Unaccompanied freight will be allowed and so will travel to the UK.

No difference at all just that going home is a more valid reason for travel than going off on a skiing holiday.
