| | Re: Coronavirus | Quote: | | | | | They knew last Monday (six days ago) that the outbreak there was due to a mutation that causes the virus to spread more easily. | | | | | Who is the "they" and what's your source for that? The statement on Saturday said that the government was officially informed only on Friday afternoon. Maybe there were labs noticing a change at the start of the week but this didn't filter through for some days. Presumably they have to consolidate data and be sure that the new strain wasn't just a blip.

BAG will be soon seeing how dumb it was not to close the ski lifts universally now. Leaving it up to the cantons means some will close and everyone else will crowd into the ones stupid enough to stay open.

Would that mean that foreigners with a Swiss permit need to go into quarantine but the Swiss not?

Official press release: https://www.admin.ch/gov/en/start/do...-id-81777.html | Quote: | | | | Coronavirus: Entry ban and retroactive quarantine for persons from the UK and South Africa
Bern, 21.12.2020 - Following the discovery of a new, more contagious variant of the coronavirus in the UK and South Africa, the Federal Council today decided to take steps to prevent the further spread of this new virus strain. All persons who have entered Switzerland from these two countries since 14 December must go into quarantine for 10 days. The Federal Council has also introduced a general entry ban from today for all foreign nationals seeking to enter Switzerland from the UK and South Africa. This is intended in particular to stop travel from these countries for tourism purposes. | | | | | | The following 3 users would like to thank MajorGrubert for this useful post:

I bet there's some panic now it's been exposed as a cluster.

I bet there's some panic now it's been exposed as a cluster. | | | | | Do you think it is for tourism or to get the numbers in, when most people will have 2wks off here anyways?
The opened slopes would agree with you.

The opened slopes would agree with you. | | | | | As I've previously mentioned, the locals will probably keep the smaller resorts afloat, but the mega resorts of Zermatt, Verbier, Wengen etc need foreigners to make them viable.

Another case of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. I wouldn't be surprised if we soon find out that this new mutation isn't actually that bad.

What are the tourists going to do if there isn't enough snow? Shopping? I cannot see people going for hikes every day.

According to the British Medical Journal | Quote: | | | | Many thousands of mutations have already arisen, but only a very small minority are likely to be important and to change the virus in an appreciable way.
COG-UK says that there are currently around 4000 mutations in the spike protein. | | | | | | This user would like to thank marton for this useful post:

I posted a quite factual article about what is known and what is not about this variant in the morning. Of course you didn't pick up on that because you are not interested in a factual discussion.

Another case of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. | | | | | Well this time they actually acted as fast as anyone could reasonably expect. and even if the variant is here this will still slow the spread and win some time for vaccinations. Even with a R of about 3 instead of about 2 it takes a while for the case numbers to build up if you're starting from only 1 or 2. | Quote: | | | | | I wouldn't be surprised if we soon find out that this new mutation isn't actually that bad. | | | | | ...despite the fact the increased infectiousness has now been confirmed by a number of sources. Usual blinkered view from you.
Or are you even referring to the complete nonsense vladest is trying to propogate that a mutation that makes the virus more infectious must make it less dangerous?
