Hey there -

Need some advice...

My husband and I have been cooped up since February & dearly miss good times with friends. We had a few over during the summertime that we trusted... now since Autumn, there has been no good times and well, we just feel lonely.

We decided to invite two dear friends of ours (married couple) for NYE, since we know they have been living their lives the same as us, and we felt we could take one small risk during the holidays. On the weekend of the 19th, he started to experience COVID-19 symptoms (achy, tired, cough) and went for a test...luckily his results were negative. However, he is still coughing and it is unusual for him as he is hardly ever sick.

I worry because I know that Covid tests aren't always fool proof. Besides the dry cough, he doesn't have any other symptoms. What do you think? Thanks a lot!
Ask him to do a repeat test.

Maybe he should have another test - for his own good, or talk to his doctor. But I’d also be reluctant - you’re high risk, no?
I wouldn't say I'm "high risk" - I have asthma/autoimmune - but otherwise I am 40 & very fit/healthy. More just "at risk".

What kind of test did he do?
I would like to ask him to take another test...I would even pay for it if needed. I am not sure which test it was, but I don't think it was the rapid one, since he had to inform his close work colleagues who went into quarantine until he received the results.

Thanks all for the advice.

I had similar, the dry cough, sore throat, achy, fever at night, even mostly lost the smell and taste .. Two weeks later I still have a cough but it's turned to more of an occasional chesty cough.. Both of my kids caught colds at same time as me but they just coughed and sneezed for 24-48 hours and then fine. Testing not offered for them.

My covid test was negative too. For what it's worth, I've seen plenty of people since and nobody caught anything.

I am really sorry to read that your attempt at a bit of normality has ended in more stress. Like others, I would suggest another test if his symptoms don't improve. My son also felt unwell recently with similar symptoms to your husband and was tested negatively twice, so it could be that he's simply caught another virus. I very much hope that is the case.

I haven't heard anything myself as I don't have school age children, but there's been rumblings that both of the two new variants are being contracted by younger people/children. Berset is currently speaking ... could be referring to it perhaps.

Well, if any schools close, my bets are on big kids schools. Not primary schools. But the numbers seem to flatten out, unless the new strains pick up.

The way the UK tourists here behaved was weird, I wonder if it explains why the UK was hit with really high infection rate, before the new strain showed up.

CZ news - R0 0.89. Still h/c measures (meeting of 2 max, only indspensible shopping and curfews). Vaxing started yesterday, I think. Most of the people do not trust it much, the CV drill is expected to last long. But the lack of trust might be because the way the vax is presented and overly medialized, politicized.

Been in the press.

Edit - scanning through Berset's presser just now looks unlikely right now...but not ruled out if circumstances change.

There were rumours in the end of the school year. On the last day of school my oldest (5th grade) brought home all the materials potentially needed for the home schooling after holidays (apart from the iPad ). The parents should be informed this week in case the school won't start as usual.

However two studies from ETH have been published recently that showed that there were no superspreading in schools and that the kids are still not the biggest spreaders of this particular virus. I do hope that the authorities take these studies in consideration and decide to open the schools as usual.

Curiously, does anyone know how Grumpy's doing? I hope he's feeling okay.
I'm doing ok thanks, certainly not well but not too serious. My quarantine ends Saturday and I'm not supposed to go out until my symptoms have ended, and that doesn't seem likely today.

The Great Escape! 200 Brits have disappeared overnight from Verbier Hotels. Their escape was camouflaged by the fog. Uneaten meals were found outside their rooms. No one knows where they are! I wonder if they have been digging a tunnel, or are trekking through the snow to France ^^

Oh yes this must be up there as one of 'the greats' in the annals of the best Great Escapes of history although
I doubt they resorted to the Steve McQueen method of stealing a German motorbike and trying to power vault
over the Swiss border.
Of course there wouldn't be any barriers or fences in the first place, if it wasn't for Brexit !!
Still no matter how many times we tell the Brit's, they never learn do they ?

That's over 4 days, so on paper not too bad. There were less tests done of course, and also I expect late reporting. Before the second week of Jan, I would treat the numbers carefully.

I know some parents or teachers might not like this comment, but I do wish they would close all the schools (have kids do home schooling) at least until more people are vaccinated and especially until we know whether or not there is going to be a worse outbreak here after the holidays and now with these mutations here from SA and the UK. Personally, I think that high-risk parents especially should be given the option of whether or not to send their kids to school. Our son has already brought home one nasty virus from school this year (not COVID, as we were both tested, but it was still a nasty virus).

Re: Coronavirus

Either way - the numbers probably aren't meaningfully possible to compare with previous weeks because of Xmas reduced testing.

Likewise, we might be in for a bumper week at some point due to the "backlog". I doubt numbers will be normal and comparable until a decent way into January,.
