Re: Coronavirus

If you’re not a blood donor it’s very unusual to know your blood type here. It’s not routinely tested by GPs. Is it different elsewhere?

We were talking about blood type being related to COVID with several colleagues, and half of them had no idea what was their blood types.

Re: Coronavirus

Ok, maybe I have to rephrase.

I know my type from donating. With my GP, I also have an annual blood test where they send the sample to a lab for wide analysis.

Of course, if you only see your GP for prescribing cold meds I would not expect much of him.

It’s no different in the UK.
Unless you donate blood or needed a transfusion for some reason you wouldn’t know your blood type.

Re: Coronavirus

It’s fairly common in the US to know your blood type. In 9th grade bio, we learned about blood types. If you wanted to test your own and you could stand a finger prick (either administered by yourself or a lab partner), you could test your blood type...just the ABO stuff. I was O. Then I gave blood in Uni and found out I was O+.

Three years ago, I had surgery and was required to bring a blood type card with me in case I needed a transfusion, I guess, so part of my pre-op involved another blood test. I have a card somewhere with blood type and some other stuff.

Re: Coronavirus

When I was pregnant (here in CH), my doctor was surprised that I didn't know my blood type or have a blood type card, so they tested mine and then gave me two cards -- one to keep in my wallet and one for a backup, I guess. It shows my blood type as well as whether I'm RhD positive or RhD negative. I was told that they're good to have on you in case you're in an accident and need to receive blood.

In fact, I only know my blood type because of that card. My Swiss husband said he doesn't know his and doesn't have one.

I would change doctors.
He informed me that they are constantly discovering new blood types. I had a transfusion in hospital though - not knowing didn’t seem to be an issue, they never even asked.

I also got my blood type card here, but I already had mine in the CZ. People know their blood type generally there as well.

I wonder how it affects the CV reaction..

To me it seems like totally natural to wish to know this stuff- to be curious about one's body.

I got my blood card here during pregnancy before giving birth. But when I asked about blood type of my newborn son the doctor said: "We have no idea. We won't take blood from such a young baby just to define his blood type". I had a good chance to ask about his blood type after hi had a surgery last year, but it didn't come to my mind in time. So I still have no idea although he is a schoolkid already.

I remember my parents told me I was "definitely" O positive as they both are. Then I found out that I am A positive.

Turns out that I'm not illegitimate, just that my dad has a bad memory

My dad was B and my mum was A so I was convinced I was something more interesting than the boring old O that I actually am.
I only found out my blood group when I was pregnant as they tested pregnant women for blood type in Belgium. They may well do that in the U.K. too.

I have a blood type card in my wallet: O-. It was issued here but I cannot recall the circumstances as to when and why I got it. I think it may have been sent by one of the numerous health insurance companies my ex-employer and I have had over the past 35 years.

Eastern European News - a shocking jump from 4000 cases yesterday in CZ to 10 000 today.

Christmas reuniting people taking its toll I think and the fact that people waited to get tested.

3rd wave while the country hasn't gotten out of the 2nd wave lockdown yet, really.
The bleak numbers from back home continue - 16 300. Despite the strict measures.

I hope we will not see the same development here and thst people were were careful over the Noël festivities.

I am seriously concerned it will get approved here - the Swiss authorities have already said that you cannot choose which vaccine you can receive. I do not want 70% effectiveness over 90+% effectiveness.

Rather 70% than 0%. You can always ask for a Pfizer booster later on!
