Re: Coronavirus

Very slight dry cough and slight burning/hot coal sensation in my chest. Comes and goes for last 1-2 weeks. No fever or anything else. Can still smell/taste normal.

I have enough bad stuff going on in my life, don't need more bull! This Corona taking a psychological toll on me!

Discussion as part as forum implies quite opposite opinions. You have to deal with this
Indeed. But I'm not the one who is accusing people of being "hysterical" any time they express concern about this pandemic.

Hope it's just the normal flu If it helps, remember that we haven't had a real winter for several years.

The user who liked to bandy the term hysterical around all the time (V_) is no longer with us.
I don’t think he really knew what hysteria meant.

It would indeed be nice if there was a separate Coronavirus thread where people could express their concerns about a pandemic and have an intelligent conversation about it without having to deal with a few select people constantly trying to accuse them of being "hysterical" and projecting their "high strung emotions."
I'm checking the official sites only or reliable sources and keep these discussions to a limited circle of acquaintances, friends and family. Even if we have different info or opinions, we're not arguing about this pandemic. It's the only way to keep your level of stress at an acceptable parameter. I don't need this shit and I came to the conclusion that I don't know how to discuss with extremely contrarian or simply malevolent people without getting at least a tiny bit annoyed. I love myself too.
What I meant to say is: maybe this forum is not that place where you can have meaningful discussions on this theme or any other themes.

Well V_ is long gone but the person accusing people of being highly strung and hysterical was on here yesterday.

I'm just putting that kind of person on my ignore list and will
no longer be affected by them or their lack of tact.

All I had was the slight cough for 4 or 5 days, never even dreamed it was Covid. But tested positive. Fortunately I hadn't mixed with anyone in that period before testing.

Below a study that German Covid popstar Drosten just referred to in his podcast. It seems to find that the South African variant is potentially resistant to anti-bodies.
Would imagine that Pfizer and Moderna are already tuning their vaccines to cope with this - apparently they can do this pretty quickly (as in a couple of weeks).

Not sure if the Oxford vaccine can be adjusted quite so soon, guess we will find out.

I've got allergies so constantly have slight coughs - if that was me I'd never have noticed. Well done for catching it.

Was actually my issue as well and the reason it took a few days to realise it was a little more frequent than usual.

There is no room to test the vaccines within a couple of weeks. This will only add to the current doubts related to the vaccines, even more people will refuse them. It seems that the current strategy based on isolation, tracking and vaccines is turning into a huge failure. It's high time for a change of strategy.

I have a permanent chronic cough so I probably wouldn’t notice it either.

The cough does have the advantage of keeping people away from me in the shops etc.

Indeed, the UK variant seems to be so contagious that lockdown measures have had little effect on its spread so far. Yesterday there came also the news that current vaccines may not even work as effectively against the South African variant. No one anywhere appears to have any sort of exit strategy.

Whenever I have heartburn (which is often), I cough like a heavy smoker and of course the burn like you have...it can be tricky. The heating/dry air will aggravate it too. Go to the pharmacy you recommended me to mate... just to be worry free.

First of all, the new mutations of the virus are far more contagious among kids than the COVID variation that we've been dealing with in the past, and there is evidence emerging that the new mutations also affect kids more strongly in terms of symptoms.
So far it's on the level of rumours. If it is proven then the decision about schools can be reviewed but it should be based on the strong scientific evidence.

Quote:
The only reason I have ever seen stated as to why primary school kids don't spread the virus easily is because they cough and sneeze less forcefully, thus causing them to expel respiratory droplets less easily. But as I mentioned, primary kids brings viruses home all the time to their families, from school. There is no reason why they would be incapable of bringing the COVID virus home as well.
The question is how often this happens and what influence on the spreading of the virus in the society it has.

We rented apartment on Walensee last week and the apartment above us was rented by Dutch people who were partying all night long every night. Closing schools under the circumstances of people from the whole Europe coming to Switzerland to party, to ski, to shop etc would be illogical. And I'm happy that our authorities admit it.

Quote:
And if primary kids are not capable of spreading the virus in schools, then why is it that they now have to wear masks in primary schools in Germany and France, etc.?
On the same reason why kids in many other European countries do not have to wear masks: because the governments are totally confused by this epidemic and making chaotic decisions hoping that one of this helps (and mostly they do not). In some countries like Russia many kids have distant learning for almost a year already. Does it help them to manage the epidemic? Not at all. The same as wearing masks for school kids didn't help Germany who now goes to one lockdown after another.

I could agree about necessity of closing schools under the condition that it would be a part of the total lockdown, when everything else excepts essential shops is closed (including hotels), no tourists and no parties are allowed and when all the visitors to the country (or to a certain region) are forcibly quarantined is the special hotels for 14 days, no exceptions. Considering the tight connections between countries that should have been done in the whole Schengen area or a big part of it simultaneously.

Closing schools is a complimentary measure (the last one, I would say) to the limitation of contacts in adult population. Otherwise it is an unnecessary burden on the parents and the mess of kid's life and education without any visible profit. If the country can limit the main sources of spreading the virus between adults and importing the new virus in the country from the outer world then maybe the schools closure would not be needed at all.
