Re: Coronavirus

Eastern European Front News - FFP2 is being debated, as next measure, it will probably become mandatory for shops and public transport, offices with service, etc. They are thinking of making it cheaper by eliminating VAT. Imho, still pricey and people will recycle old FFP2 which should be for one time use (apparently 8-10hrs as per Czech media). That's one thing, I also can imagine people opting for not taking public transport and not running important errands, which isn't a good scenario either. I think these FFP2s should be again gifted by the gov to the eldrerly as it happened in CZ in the Spring 2020 when post distributed 10 per 1 retired person. The measure is being debated now due to the concrete numbers of the UK mutated strain in CZ.

At least FFP2 are demonstrably better than normal surgical or fabric masks, however as you say, they also become pointless if people don't use them correctly (ie by reusing them).

What else will they be able to do if synchronising measures with FFP2 availability is as always gonna be a mess. They are expensive, on top. I haven't even seen them here much, either.

Of course that they are better. But then I've been sporting the darth vader (rip) 3d printed plastic respirator, it protects but is....unpleasant. Forget good sound transfer, either.

Germany is considering mandating FFP2 in certain cases, following Bavaria and Austria. A number of issues foreseen.

Quote:
“In theory, the move to more professional masks is welcome,” said Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit, a German virologist and Professor of Arbovirology at the University of Hamburg. “But I’d be wary of simply copying the Bavarian model without considering the possible downsides.

“In most cases FFP2 masks will be ineffective if they aren’t professionally fitted: people will end up breathing through the gap between mask and face rather than through the designated filter.” Virologists also say that beards can prevent the masks from sealing properly around the face.

“I can see how FFP2 masks could be a useful emergency solution for workplaces where you cannot easily guarantee safety ventilation,” Schmidt-Chanasitsaid. “But I am sceptical of making them mandatory on public transport, where there are other ways to avoid the risk of aerosols, and where passengers may be forced to wear masks for longer than the 75 minutes advised by regulatory authorities.”

Re: Coronavirus

Anyone know a reliable place to buy N95/FFP2 masks for a reasonable-ish price in packs of 20 or more? There are so many fakes advertised on Ebay and Amazon.

EDIT - Hmm this place has 40% off... need to see if its legit but it shows a Swiss address and contact details which is a promising sign. https://safemask.ch/onlineshop/ExiIn...3#pll_switcher

EDIT EDIT - Ok looks legit to me so I bought 60 for 115chf including postage... its by far best price I found for tested N95 masks.

Well - that's actually has reasonable evidence behind it, unlike cloth masks which don't - and probably turn big heavy droplets which would fall onto the ground into aerosol.

I was saying ages ago that I could see why they'd consider mandating FFP2 (if supplies allow), but that cloth masks are pretty much a waste of time - possibly somewhat effective, but possibly making things worse - who knows.

Masks (unless you go to at least N95) do not offer protection to the wearer, but rather are designed to protect others from the wearer. I don't think we produce a lot of aerosol from our eyes.

I ordered some and nearly had an asthma attack in Coop...very hard to breathe with them. Shame as I need their protection because of my asthma, but can't wear them because of my asthma.

FFP2 actually protects the wearer. This is why medical personnel treating Covid patients have to wear them.

Oh I agree - hence my comment "unless you go to at least N95".

Sadly for everyone else, my wife panic bought half of Western Europes N95 masks in January. We have the best part of a thousand still. Thankfully they were a fraction of the price they are now. I've been using them sparingly - only in the more dangerous situations in case this sort of restriction came in.

I meant someone sneezes and our eyes come in contact with the material?

Bottom line: You should wear some sort of eye covering if you're in high-risk situations where you're likely to come into contact with the virus. And if you just want to be extra safe, goggles or a face shield can add an extra layer of protection. But for the average person, wearing a face mask and practicing social distancing should suffice.

I bought some from DeinDeal the other day and find them really comfortable. Think they were CHF 19.90 for 20 masks.

It always amuses me when media make a smart sounding comment about an average person in an average situation when what they are writing about are new emergency conditions and a brand new disease.
