| | Help Me Love Winter and Avoid Darkness/Depression
Trying to get in the mindset to appreciate winter in CH.
I find if I don't plan in advance how to do things to get enough sun & light it really starts to affect my mood.
Perhaps others need this assistance as well.
Wondering if anyone has any thoughts.
I will kick it off ...... Things I like about Winter in CH:
. Views of Mountains Standout with Snow on them.
. Winter Walks
. Full Moon Nights if Clear Sky with Light bouncing off snow
. Cozy around the table grills with friends Things I do when it's particularly miserable outside:
. Monitor the weather sites, make sure I plan a day ahead to be sure and quickly get out in the hours when it's sunny.
. Use Webcams (Uetliberg, etc) to see where the microclimates are where the sun is out and head for a quick walk there.
. Plan Travel to in advance to Sunny Places every few months (keep an eye on Swiss and lastminute.com deals to cheaper closer places to hop to for a long weekend (cheapest seem to be: Barcelona, TelAviv, Spanish Islands, Sicily, Malta, Athens, Egypt, perhaps Dubai/AbuDabi/Qatar).
. Go to Indoor Green Places such as: (Zurich Zoo / Masoala Hal, Zurich Tribhuus Resaurant, Zurich Turm Restaurant).
. Enjoy more indoor things so don't mind so much: Museums, Movies, Working out in Nice Gyms, etc.
. Go To Warm Spa Places such as BadRagaz Pools.
. Have a special light near my desk to get more light.
. Learn about places nearby I can quickly and easily get above high fog and into sunshine (for Zurich I have found Uetliberg, Amden, Etzel, Bactel Area)
. Invest in cozy warm clothing so don't care about cold.
. Make a deal with myself that I only have to get up early on weekends until end of March (Daylight change) so I have longer sunlight / more possibility of sunlight / good weather hours to get out in sun.
. Quickly hop on a Zurich Publibike when there is a few hours of sun so I can get around more quickly in nice sun areas in nature.
. Eat more winter-helping foods that give me more energy in cold ..... root vegetables, potatoes, meats, some starches, warm drinks such as herbal teas, etc.
. Balance/Embrace some darkness as a time to benefit turning inwards.
(P.S. I'm not a skier)
Thanks for any thoughts,

Thanks for this list! I have just arrived a week ago and it is gloomy... I'm finding I need to really push myself to walk outside and keep moving so I don't get stiff and lazy.

I belong to a club of one where I go bathing!

I prefer a cold Winter to stiflingly hot Summer... much more fun and comfortable! In Winter you can ski, snowshoe, sledge, wear nice cosy clothes, sleeping is easy, no bugs everywhere, no humidity or sweating. If the year consisted of 5 months of cold and snowy Winter, 5 months of warm (22c max) Spring, 1 month of rainy Autumn and only 1 month month of hot and sweaty (30c+) Summer then it would be ideal for me.
In fact if I had to choose between global warming and global cooling I would choose the cooling in a heartbeat.

It's been the warmest and sunniest January on record, if you complain about the weather we had this January then you are in for some very nasty surprises | The following 8 users would like to thank for this useful post: | | This user groans at for this post: | |

Perhaps you have Seasonal Affective Disorder? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Season...ctive_disorder
I know many people who do and who use light therapy to help.

One should never take a person’s feeling of depression lightly. Be grateful that you’ve never suffered from it.

This winter has been t-shirt weather compared to the usual winters here. Am regretting not being able to utilise my winter gear yet.
But the OP has some very good points for coping with the kind of winter Switzerland is used to in Zurich. The worst is the fog, but this year so far (not today) has been pretty good and blue. And easy to just get into the clear blue skies.

Things looked pretty good to me last week after just a 2 hour train ride from Zurich to Arosa (and the trains are on time here .
Arrived before I’d even finished my WiFi surfing.
Then went for a wonderful 5 hour walk in the snow, followed by wine in the sun.

I'd say ski, but I just saw your PS, OP. Sports do make things easier.

Can be walking, even if it’s in the fog it can be wonderful just a little bit above Zurich. When you are wrapped-up warmly, it’s one of the best feelings to be in / above or below the fog. You see that you have come a long way from e.g. Brighton, London, Orpington, Brixton, Bromley and so on (sorry, just my own bio).
And even better, the trains are pretty much on time here.

Take away the clouds and the wind and those SHIT jet trails in Zurich then you have a really warm perfect sunny 20 degree day.
Last year in the last 2 weeks of February a really strong Azonen High took control over Europe. Hopefully it repats itself this year
