Heavy rubbish

Here where I live one can buy stickers from the gemeinde to attach to heavy rubbish which is then collected. We have a mattress and a sofa-bed to dispose of (or at least will have shortly). Each sticker covers 10kg, but both items are too heavy to weigh at home so any ideas how we work out the number of stickers required?

Re: Heavy rubbish

Do you have any info on the products or something similar where you can do some web hunting?

I don't know what you have but as an example, I did a search for mattresses on IKEA and picked two that are 140 x 200 with springs. Looking at the package details, for the thinner one the package is 24.2 kilos. I also checked a thicker mattress that costs more. That package is 36 kilos. You can see why any old product info you have could be helpful.

Sofa beds can be very heavy if they're upholstered. One I looked at with a metal frame shows as 28 kgs whereas the cheapest upholstered was 56 kilos.

Re: Heavy rubbish

I can't find any useful labels, but I reckon they're at the heavy end of the estimates. I don't know what happens if you don't attach enough labels....

Go over rather than under and you should be ok. It's not as if the collectors can weigh the sofa at the side of the road either.

Is there a maximum weight limit for these things? That's what I would check.

I just checked the Dubendorf website and apparently for a sofa, you need 2 stickers for each place on the sofa so if it is a three-seater sofa, you'll need six stickers. For the mattress, I'd do what 3Wishes suggested.

Re: Heavy rubbish

If you have the time to break it down and shove it in a car, or know somebody with a van/trailer, there is the Stadt Dübendorf, Abteilung Abfall & Recycling where they charge by weight for some items and nothing for metal.
It's here: Usterstrasse 105, 8600 Dübendorf.
I've no idea what the stickers cost, but last time I threw out a bed mattress and a futon mattress I think I paid aroun 10CHF.

Re: Heavy rubbish

One slight problem: A Sperrgut item for collection in Dübendrof cannot be longer than 2.5 m, and must not weight more than 40 kg.

Allow me to introduce you to the best friend of demolition workers and melee fighters of post apocalyptic wastelands, the sledgehammer.

Or if the apocalypse has not yet occurred, there is the angle grinder for those who wish to really annoy their neighbours, it has a points multiplier for certain times of day as well if you need to grind levels.
