On the other hand older parents typically have more money, already have a decent place to live, and lots of other material and also life experience advantages that take some of the pain out of parenting.
Theoretically. But then, in my experience kids tend to worry about older parents.

FC stated that advancing age makes fertility harder for women. That is where he is right. As others point out, it is for a reason.
Not to mention the increased risk of complications - or is that also taboo?

You all still here? I just came back in to turn the lights out, damn, can't believe I'm getting sucked into this discussion again..

My bullet points on fertility:
  • Our fertility expiry dates are there for a reason: children need the parents (or at least the mother) to live long enough until they can be independent, so evolution has put in this safety net. Sorry girls, nature has dealt you a bad hand.
  • Reproducing after 50 may be biologically possible, but maybe not fair to the kids. I feel borderline at having my second at 48, he's going to be leaving high school as I retire.
  • Reproductive desperation (which can occur in both sexes) is a dangerous thing..compromising on a partner to produce offspring will only end in tears, mainly for the kids.
  • Nature is cruel: I know some very young couples who cannot conceive, it's truly heartbreaking. I know also older couples who have had "accidents" in their 40s. Nature is cruel, fairness is a purely human concept.

Right, now will someone turn the lights out?
About nature being cruel, actually I think humans are pretty much in the minority in terms of there being an age limit on reproduction. In much of the animal and even plant world the normal thing is to push out offspring until you drop dead. Offspring with low chances of survival or a higher chance of deformity are still better than no offspring at all if you're looking at it from a purely Darwinian point of view.

What is different in humans, and I guess our closer evolutionary relatives too (but I must check the details there) is that we have social structures that change some of that. And evolution decided that kids don't just need mothers but also need grandmothers and thus programmed women to have a menopause so they could better concentrate on that role.

Obviously evolution didn't think the same of the concept of grandfathers.

Well, female reproduction* is full of taboos, I tell ya. It is changing for the better, the more people talk about it. Like, babyblues are considered not only a legit condition but scientists dare to publish that 80% of women go through that hell. And men, too, in their way.

We have made quite a leap from benign courting to desperate reproduction, lol. Which isn't reserved to women only.

* eta - and male, too.

I love how people are talking about evolution as though it has some decision making apparatus. Anthropomorphising a random process. If your generation survives and procreates, your genes stay in the pool. That‘s it.

I've already sent him a redacted screen shot. He was laughing so hard he had to leave his open plan office.

He says I don't leave him with enough energy for a girlfriend. And a few other things that would mean Chuff isn't likely to be invited over for tea any time soon but he's happy to take him out for a few beers and explain ... many things... to him! Is very funny.

To be honest, there's a lot of people who never had or will have the prime of their lives in the sense you mean. No matter if they're young, their poor physical condition could never be associated to "prime".

What is that supposed to mean, MC? The first line, you know....is that recommendation addressed to chuff, to RufusB, to Rufus' husband? Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things, but being a little less vague might help keeping the discussion on track.

I think that was an ad hominem that shouldn't take place, neither on this thread, nor on this forum. It's hard to keep positive when some members can't refrain from resorting to ad hominem at the slightest difference of opinion or misunderstanding.

Over 50, sure.

Over 40, if they do, they have an IUD.

Can you provide any evidence to back that statement up?

I’m referring to the ‘most’ part of your statement, nobody is disputing that fertility decreases with age.
I’ll take that as a no then.

I'll admit it, what I wrote was incorrect. I probably should have wrote:

Many women over 40 can have problems naturally reproducing without complications .
