If everybody liked me I'd be a bit of a flag in the wind, no?

The statistics will soon show that Star Wars geeks have a lower infection rate than Star Trek geeks due to the much greater incidence of full-face helmet wearing.

Sure. The effects on the overall fertility rate have not yet been studied, though.

Not sure of the effect on fertility. I know for sure that I wouldn't have a crush on Star Wars or Star Trek uber fans. Somethings we just know without knowing how we know.

Logic plays zero role in attraction. It is the enemy of it, really.

Camouflage. Shrek is en vogue?

I wonder what local mimicry is popular here...ie. belonging somewhere.

Re: Swiss men and dating

Thanks for the replies
I see I stirred up a lot of protests by mentioning PhD and „poorer Mentalities“
Just for clarification: I do not flag my degree at a date, it just comes up in conversations.... I am not proud as such about the PhD, I don‘t even mention it when I‘m filling up forms in fact, unless it is a job.
About the poor mentality thing, I stand by what I said! Being 1/8 colombian and 1/4 swedish, and having visited both I can say Colombia is a country where women are interested in being maintained by a man, they tend to not want to have some challenge for themselves, it is just cultural. Having lived in Sweden I see this is the complete opposite... women are allowed to thrive outside the household! In such a day and age YES I would consider Colombia a country of poorer mentality.

Good for you. I am glad you cared to read the outrage that loads of posters poured out here. What would be the next step, for you and other women in your situation/mindset? I hope you don't get discouraged by guys who feel intimidated by other people's achievements or cave in their own complexes.

I won't get back reading the whole thread but I think some people tried to point out that maybe it is not your PhD that stays in the way...

Maybe you pick up the wrong type of Swiss/males? (wrong for you, obviously)
Whom they choose and why, shouldn't be of so much concern after all. I think you're focusing too much on what they (seem to) want and not on what you want.

Change the perspective and miracles can and do happen.

Btw, using "poorer mentalities" does sound....ahem, not nice. Generalisations are never good, but that it's not really the point here.

Be proud of your PhD! But it is part of what you are, your passion and interest in its subject matter and your experience are part of who you are.

Greenmount is right, you should be equally selective as your date, and have your "deal breakers" first and foremost, and be ready to walk. Be active, not passive.

I think telling a PhD that she has to be selective when dating is....uhmmmmm....what's the right word

This thread is hilarious, I love it.

Sure? Casual conversation is a minefield.

I was a PhD student once and it took me 2 or 3 months to learn to say something else when asked in the bar about my life. Locals don't react well to an ausländer getting paid to study. People reacted better to "I'm here to study French". I mean, you just want to have a few drinks and a good time.

After graduation, I just say "geologue", "geothermal", "wärmepumpe" and forget the most controversial stuff because people get triggered so fast.

Pride is a feeling or an attitude, no words are needed to feel it or act according to it. I just want to make friends, talking about the PhD and later work is secondary.

Besides my official PhD I hold an honorary doctorate from a bogus university. I bought it because I thought it was funny.

Same here. It is funny that it us actually constantly my local buddies and colleagues who tell me to flaunt it, where I am from nobody cares, in fact it is a bit of a "gawd, poor you, we need more naieve people like you devoting time to such charity and glamorless life".

But OP isn't here to be paid to study. It sounds that it is just guys overreacting to an assertive female, because they may have expected a foreigner with a lot more self-effaced attitude or somebody needing them. She sounds like she just doesn't need to play the ever so boring and expected damsel-in-distress game, or other games, for that matter.

I think if one loves their work, you will hear about it and it can be completely selfless. It is like loving other things, you want to share. It is probably a lack of curiosity on OP's side about the guys' lives maybe that the guys might not like. But curiosity in my cultural setting is interpreted on a 1st date as lack of manners, nosy-ness? We let people decide what they want to share and how much. So. Not really passive but respectful.
