Moving from Zürich to Basel : a few questions

Hello everybody,

After 2 years in Zürich, we are moving this spring to Basel.
I know a little bit the city, was there a couple of times. I don't post this message to start a fight on this forum between those who prefer BS or ZH.
I personally like both

Here are my questions :

- Is it possible to swim somewhere in the Rhine, outside the center ? Or in a smaller river in the surroundings ? (we have a baby and one of us has to stay in the shadow with the little one, a green area is nicer than the city center) My friend is sure that there is something around the city but I did not find anything, except maybe the area Rheinpark/Birsköpfli ?

- We like to go running/having a stroll on the Uetliberg. Could the hill of St Chrischona be something slightly similar ? even if lower.
Or anything else recommended ?

- I have the feeling that kleinbasel is less green (parks and co) than Grossbasel ? (we are currently starting looking for an apt/neighborhood)

- Is Binningen the best value for money ? Health insurance and local taxes are much cheaper in Basseland AND there is a good subsidy for the Krippe (for exemple we would not get any in Birsfelden, each city has its own rules). I did not look for Allschwil, as we did not like really the area.

Many thanks for your help and advice !

Avoid klein basel at all cost, the traffic for the fair is annoying, better avoid some streets /parks in klein basel because of drug use/trade.

Re: Moving from Zürich to Basel : a few questions

I'm quite new to Basel and I don't know Zurich, but here are my observations so far...

Basel is small, so it is really easy to move around. I currently live in Kleinbasel, but it's so quick to cross the bridge by foot or tram. Similarly, each street has a different feel, more so than neighborhoods. I visited apartments that were very close to each other on the map, but felt very different in-person.

I'm moving to Grossbasel in a few months, but I didn't have a strong preference for specific side of the river or neighborhood. I was more interested in the unit, the building, and the immediate surroundings (plus commute to work). There's a wide range of places; I'm sure you'll find something you like! I'd advise just walking around and seeing how you feel about the locations.

Thanks for your message ! First I thought you were french, based on your username, but it seems that you are american

We still don't know between Basel Stadt and Baselland.
And yes we will go again the next 2 months, to get a better idea of the city and surroundings.

I agree, it is a great city in summer, for bathing and the nature is very close.
But, except this winter, I have found it very foggy.

Yes it can be very foggy. But then if its foggy here then its generally foggy everywhere ( except in the mountains )

In Basel Kannenfeldpark and Schützenmattpark are very popular, family parks.

BL is a little cheaper on tax, and cheaper on health insurance.

Search for Basel on the forum and you'll see the pros and cons have already been discussed extensively.

Yes indeed I have already read many posts about this subject, that is the reason I had more specific questions. My 2 last questions about the greenery in kleinbasel and grossbasel + Binningen could sound more general and asked many times though.

Gross Basel is nicer than Klein Basel, no-one will argue with that.
However, if you go over towards LangeErlan or Riehen it's very pleasant.

Well they might; this is EF after all. Personally I quite like KB, but although we had a studio there for years I could never say we really lived there as such.

I spent my first year here living in Riehen. Nice little village/town, with quick and easy links to the city by bus, tram, cycle or car. And it's actually in Basel-Landt, hence has a lower tax rate too. I could never picture myself living in the city (any city) proper, so it suited me very nicely.

Uh it seems to me that Riehen is a part of Basel-Stadt, not a neighborhood but what one of the two "gemeinde", with Bettingen . The health insurance cost is the same level as Basel Stadt and the local taxes are a bit less indeed but not as cheap as in Baselland, according to the online tax calculator.

Yes, you're quite right, I misremembered. It's part of Basel Stadt canton but not Basel Stadt gemeinde.

Hello everybody,

Here are my questions :

- Is it possible to swim somewhere in the Rhine, outside the center ? Or in a smaller river in the surroundings ? (we have a baby and one of us has to stay in the shadow with the little one, a green area is nicer than the city center) My friend is sure that there is something around the city but I did not find anything, except maybe the area Rheinpark/Birsköpfli ? I advise you plan to stick with swimming pools for long swims. The rivers all flow fast. Sure, go out to the countryside and find something. It's still a cold, fast moving river like the Rhein. So who cares. It'll be less than a 5 minute bath.

- We like to go running/having a stroll on the Uetliberg. Could the hill of St Chrischona be something slightly similar ? even if lower.
Or anything else recommended ? Sure. And Lange Erlen is great for this too, or if you need more elevation, go into BL, Soloturn, Black forest, or Vosges.

- I have the feeling that kleinbasel is less green (parks and co) than Grossbasel ? (we are currently starting looking for an apt/neighborhood) Yes, Klein Basel is filthy - stick with Gross Basel.

- Is Binningen the best value for money ? Health insurance and local taxes are much cheaper in Basseland AND there is a good subsidy for the Krippe (for exemple we would not get any in Birsfelden, each city has its own rules). I did not look for Allschwil, as we did not like really the area.Best value for money? Have more kids and move to Germany or France!

Many thanks for your help and advice !

Where the Birs meets the Rhine at Rheinpark. In the Wiese at Lange-Erlen. There are Rhine swims as well, but it's not the cleanest river.

Chrischona has some nice walks. But there are good walks all over. You'll find somewhere you like.

Baselland in general is cheaper to live in than Basel. Binningen has low taxes, excellent infrastructure and is very close to the city. But the flip side of the that is higher rents.

Allschwil is big. There are some very pleasant parts.

You may also wish to consider: Muttenz, Bottmingen, Münchenstein, Dornach, Arlesheim.

The further out you are, the greener it is, and the lower the rents. But with the trains, trams and buses, you're never far from the city. With a child, I'd recommend Baseland or Riehen over the city itself.
