Border closing between Ticino and Italy

I tried to cross into Italy today from Ticino and was told that it is not possible until April 3rd. The border has been closed except for certain situations. I need to return a rental car on Friday but am concerned about being allowed to come back into Switzerland. Does anyone have any information about situations like this? Thanks

Give them a call if they can meet you at the border, or if you can drop of the car somewhere in Switzerland. Both might cost you some extra tho.

Apparently tourists are exempt from the travel restrictions in order to return home.

You are aware of how incredible expensive that could turn out to be?

No, it is a rental car, I'm not sure what your referring to.

That you are committing tax-fraud by driving an Italian registered car in Switzerland as a Swiss resident without special approval. (with form 15.25 it is possible to get an 8 days approval for rentals)

If you get caught (not unthinkable since you have to pass the border in these days of stricter checks, but I myself would not risk it anyway) you're likely to pay all costs that would occur with a normal export and they are not shy to give you an extra 50% on top of that.

(import costs would be afaik about 37,- per 100KG, 4% tax and 7,7% VAT)

Many people are unaware of the restrictions on rental cars, originating country, and their country of residence. Edwin points it out quite well.

Good luck on all accounts!

I once did a similar stunt, not knowing about it at all. Customs happily waved me through. Boy, knowing in hindsight about the risk I was taking at that time, I'd have filled out that form in a rush I can tell you.

Re: Border closing between Ticino and Italy

who gives a sh!te about the hire car, the important news for you wannabe-more-swiss-than-swiss-citizens is that the border is closed btw Italy and CH, or did you overlook that point in your zeal to condemn the OP?

Not overlooked at all. It has been discussed in the Coronavirus thread

Bunch of bullshit you write here.

I gave him a decent option which he can try, and I neutrally warned him what the costs can be of his current construction, so at least he now knows that going to the Swiss border workers with "Heya, I need to return this car to Italy but they will not let me in, can you help" is not the most brilliant idea possible. As for the border being closed being great news. Just read whatever newspaper or news website, or follow up on the Corona topic where it also has been widely discussed and you would have known.

Report at the desk at the border when bringing the car into the country with the rental contract, fill out form 15.25 and you can get an exemption for a maximum of 8 days. When you export the car again you have to return the form. And the form has to be kept in the car when driving in Switzerland.

Is that both ways? Or is it just the Italians who let nobody in?

If it's both ways, how is the idea of someone picking up the car at the border gonna work? Loosen the handbrake and give it a push?
Not to mention that questions will be asked (re "Swiss" driver of car with Italian plates).

I'd call the rental car company - now, not on Friday - and ask for their suggestions. It's not that they are not aware of the problem.

You did kind of drip feed him the information.
You could have just given him all the information he needed in one post from the outset without all the questions.
