How to stop junk mail (Basel-Land)

It took me several months to find a way to get rid of the ridiculous amounts of junk mail clogging my mail box (mostly local newspapers) but I finally succeeded (haven't got any junk mail for over a month) and thought I would share the recipe, in case someone might need it.

The process was as follows (the first four steps did not have any effect - so skip those):

1. My mail box has engraved a sign that says no to advertisments - did not work

2. I ordered the no advertisements/newspapers stickers from Konsumentenschutz - "Bitte keine Werbung" and "Bitte keine Gratiszeitungen" - did not work at all

3. I registered myself on the robinson-list, which is free and can be done online here - no effect

4. I put a refuse-sticker on several newspapers and sent it back to the sender - no effect

(4b. When I didn't empty the mail box as it filled up with junk mail, the postman put the next portions of junk mail in the unlocked/accessible part of the mail box )

5. I wrote to all of the newspapers/magazines in my mail box and it was a GREAT SUCCESS!

The message:
Subject: Negativliste

Guten Tag.

Ich bitte Sie, Ihr Wochenblatt/Zeitschrift in Zukunft nicht mehr in meinen Briefkasten/Milchkasten zu legen.

Mit freundlichen Grüssen

A simple “Pas de Pub” sticker worked for us. It took a couple of weeks though. Once in a while the free Thursday La Côte rag slips through. And all the political crap gets through.

Re: How to stop junk mail (Basel-Land)

From your post it suggests that the newspapers and magazines were addressing their mail to you. If your address is on it, that isn’t junk.

But good tip, thank you.

Only one of the newspapers was addressed to me (the church paper), sorry if I wasn't clear about this.

I need to do this. The quantity of junk I get after just a couple of days is just ludicrous!

Re: How to stop junk mail (Basel-Land)

A Swiss colleague of my husband who is from Basel told him a while back it is a legal requirement for a local free newspaper to be delivered to your postbox. I live in Breite and we get the free ones for Kleinbasel, Grossbasel and also Birsfelden which is about 7 mins walk. Added to that we get the quarterly magazine for Breite, St Alban and Gellert, which I find interesting.

I don't mind getting them as I like to read what's going on in various neighbourhoods and they help with my basic Deutschsprechen. I also enjoy the free COOP magazine we get every week as it has good recipes. It's not difficult to put them out in the monthly recycling, when I've read them I just store them in a paper carrier bag in the basement ready for the next paper / card recycling day, when I just put the bag outside the building

This surprises me a bit...for what it's worth, I just recently started delivering for Direct mail (Denner, Volg, Landi...). I was explicitly instructed not to put them in mailboxes w/such labels as "Keine Werbung, bitte", etc...and I adhere to this, even if it's just written on w/a marker, they don't get one. So maybe your delivery person just doesn't care! Glad you got it sorted anyway.

Kudos!

OP's case appears to be different though. Writing to the originator won't work unless the goods bear the recipient's address, in which case Cherub's post applies (legal requirement to deliver).

Re: How to stop junk mail (Basel-Land)

We were in a similar situation for the first few months. Felt like every weekend we were taking a stack of papers to the recycling centre :\
Soon as we slapped on a post-it note saying "bitte keine werbung" we only got post, the occasional addressed stuff and one or two take-away menus.I
Best of luck.
