Customs on a collectible item?

I wish to order a collectible item -- very small but with a somewhat high appraised value (less than 10,000 ChF, but more than 1,000).

Does anyone know how customs would work? I assume VAT would be roughly 7%?

Thank you!

Yes, 7.6% VAT, but I believe antiques (if that is what it is) of a certain age are exempt but need to be declared.

Funnily enough their website explains it all - in English if I remember correctly.

VAT, handling charge, admin fee.

There are collectibles- and collectibles. But you may well have to prove age, value, provenance, etc.

Re: Customs on a collectible item?

Depends where it's coming from. For imports from some countries there will be duty to be paid with VAT on top. From others there will be no duty, just VAT.

As for customs clearance, depends who you use to transport the item. The Post have their charges shown on line. The major courier's, DHL, UPS etc also have a set of charges. If it's an independent transporter he will use a clearance agent at the border, and they will also charge, but you'll have to find out how much.

If you're bringing it in personally, and it's for private use, the customs will calculate what's due, and if for commercial purposes they will send you to a clearance agent to complete the paperwork.
