Neighborhood near Dubendorf

Hi,
I just accepted an offer in Zurich. So once this whole pandemic is over, we will relocate to Zurich. I start to look around neighborhood to live. My son (8 yr old) is currently going to a French school so we want him to continue in French school that once we move. Since the French school is in Dubendorf and I will work in Oerlikon, we are considering to live around that neighborhood. What would be a good family friendly neighborhood to live within 15 min train or buss commute (we will not plan to have a car) to the school? My son loves to play soccer and swim so a town with those facilities will be preferable. I also want to make sure we are not in the flight path. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Avoiding flight paths will be difficult in that area. Search for minergie houses, that will keep the noise at a very low level.

Kindhausen (near Volketswil) is within 15 mins train and possibly also bus ride, or 10 mins by car. It's out in the sticks so forests next door, it just avoids the plane noises from the airport, there's decent local shopping at Volketswil, with some in nearby Hegnau also, and you have a choice of nearby train stations - Effretikon or Schwerzenbach - which have different routes.

I don't know the area very well but there is definitely a lot of planes in Dübendorf. What about Uster?
Use zvv.ch to check travelling times to the address of the School. There is two direct trains from Uster to Dübendorf but check where in Dübendorf the School is. Also check if the School offers a bus service for Children. This might make it easier.
Check out the Website homegate to get some ideas for Apartments.

Re: Neighborhood near Dubendorf

I live in Dübendorf and honestly the flights don't bother me in the least. I see them fairly often from my balcony but they seem to aim more along the Züriberg than Dübendorf itself. Noise is minimal for me. The military airport has the helicopters and the Pilatus flying, but I like the noise of those and I'm the wrong side of the town to see them.

In honesty I think Dübendorf is a fine spot, it can feel a little old at times with a lot of retired age folk about, and other times it feels like an edge suburb of Zürich city where everyone commutes. There's plenty of food shops, the eating out selection is limited, but there is one new(ish) bar in the town called "My Senses", very nice spot.

I'm located here because I wanted easy access to the town whilst not wanting to drive out of the city every day to get to work which is near the Greifensee. If you've any questions let me know, I know nothing about schools but I'll answer what I can.

EDIT:
See below for the noise map, Dübi barely rates a mention.

I looked at Wallisellen before ending up here, the only reason I didn't move there was because I heard there were scooterless mods about the place. Either that or I couldn't find a place.

One thing I like in Wallisellen is the indoor 50m pool you have for the winter time. Very easy commute to town/airport as well.

I moved there because I used to fly a lot for work. Very convenient to arrive from a long haul flight and be home in 10 minutes.
Also great connection to Zuri and the advantage of much lower tax rates than Zuri.

Re: Neighborhood near Dubendorf

We moved last year to Stettbach, in the new tower. Our neighbor is the French School. This is pretty good location, and for us we only get the planes that we notice early in the mornings, 6 til 7, but its more background noise, they are not so disturbing for us. There are some early evening but we never notice those.

Stettbach has several new builds going up and is being developed, we are in Jabee Tower, at some point the 3 points will start to be built and I would guess later this year Stettbach Mitte will be finished.

No idea how much you know Zurich and Switzerland. But setting a 15 min transport radius will cover a huge area. You can live down town Zurich, Hardbrucke, even Alttsetten just about.

Schwarmendigen (may or may not be spelt correctly) is in the Zurich zone, so higher tax than Dubendorf, but very convenient for Oerlikon and for the French school. Not far in to town. Cheap digs I would guess. The area I dont know so well but probably isnt the best

Re: Neighborhood near Dubendorf

My tuppeny's worth here. Stay in Dübendorf if that's where your social hub is going to be.

I lived in Dübendorf many many years ago, and going back today I don't feel it has really changed much. It's fairly safe and walkable and has more green than most comparable towns I know of. The adjoining forests and Glatt river give opportunities for cycling or walking in your free time. Public transport into Zürich is excellent, with two stations, several different train lines as well as various buses. My old favourite and a bit of a secret was the 751 bus which takes you to the zoo and then to the ETH area of Zürich in next to no time. So actually Dübendorf offers quite a good life overall, while being affordable, unpretentious and down to earth. I think the noise from planes is over stated or maybe affects only certain parts of Dübendorf. The people there are a good mix too, with a pleasant and balanced mix of Swiss and foreign, yound and old, different social backgrounds. Probably easier to make friends than in many more up market and snobbish places.

Thank you. Yes, that is the French school we are hoping for him to get into. If the area is being built, how is construction noise and dust? Is there any park nearby?
