Driving to the UK during the Lockdown

We have a family emergency in the UK, and are debating if we should travel over by car.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get through the boarders to France and then to England?

And on our return, will we face any issues? (we have B permits)

Thanks for your advise.

French borders are closed unless you are a resident of France.

I believe if you are a U.K. national with permanent residence in the U.K, you are allowed to cross France to get to the U.K.

There is a fair amount of information on the Euro Tunnel website which are still running. That would be a better option for me compared to the ferry.

https://www.eurotunnel.com/uk/travel...test/covid-19/

While I hope there isn't any emergency, with all my relatives in UK, I still keep an eye on travel restrictions so please share any other information

Hope everything works our with you and your emergency

Not correct for in transit and you complete an Attestation de déplacement international PRIOR to travel.

This. As long as you are only transiting through France and fill out the attestation before leaving then there is no problem.

Small correction - UK nationals can return whether they have permanent residence or not, non-nationals if they have permanent residence.

Same basically applies on returning to CH (CH nationals or permanent residents...plus cross border workers).

When I looked we needed this to enter France, plus the regular daily movement paperwork to travel through France, plus evidence that we were essentially leaving CH permanently, or at least to a permanent UK address.

Is this no longer required?

The various French forms are linked below, even available in English for those who were not listening at school

Do you have any documentation confirming this. So if I wanted to drive over, just because I fancied a holiday, I could?

If you are a British national or have permanent residence status in the UK then you are perfectly entitled to travel to the UK, whether it is a good idea or not is a different matter entirely.
Personally I would only do it if it was a real emergency involving one of the family.

There are currently about 3 flights a week to London from GVA if that's an alternative for you. Maybe from Zurich too.

Will check again- but your links are for people in France, not in Switzerland, I though- and with Swiss plated cars.

Your document gives info for travel within France, and for travel to and from French overseas territories.

''for a trip from mainland France to French overseas territories
for an international travel from abroad to mainland France
for an international travel from abroad to French overseas territories''

For travelling through as well, Borders opened between Geneva / France yesterday.

It won't matter about the Swiss plate as you are British, it's written on the form, even through you reside in CH.

Re: Driving to the UK during the Lockdown

How about if you are a Swiss national with family established in the UK?
In case of an emergency would that person be able to either fly to the UK or travel to the UK via France?
(train, car, hot-air balloon, walking, whatever).

Has anyone British here with permanent residence status in Switzerland actually driven back to the U.K. via France?

The problem is you need two documents:

The first: "Exempted International Movement Certificate for Travel to Metropolitan France" allows you to enter France.

The second:"Attestation de déplacement dérogatoire" is to allow you to proceed through France which you will have to show when (not if) you are stopped within France.

It's the second one that may cause you more problems.

If you are a permanent Swiss resident, travelling back for a family emergency may not be considered a reason to travel.
In that case, your car details will be noted and you will be forced to go back to Switzerland.

Re: Driving to the UK during the Lockdown

Apart from the other advice already given, if you are a member of the TCS, you may be able to get up to date information there.

https://www.tcs.ch/de/kontakt-fragen...5#711631935780

That used to, at least, be a prime function of a motoring organisation although nowadays, they appear more interested in selling insurance and other services.

May well be the case, but this is not clear at all from the documents you linked.
There is btw, no way we would drive to UK now unless there was a true and serious emergency with grandchildren or close family int the UK. Would not drive back for any family funeral either.
