This plan is working almost whole Europe wide, is based on extremely high cost of individual transport and completely not on you. The land-cost of infrastructure is simply too high. The decision is first to make short hauls inconvenient and expensive, not to ban them. Just watch how free parking places are rarer than unicorns.

Of course there are scenarios when this could turn around, like catastrophic depopulation of Europe or rise of autonomous cars, but probably first is more in zone of Mad Max movies and second means the end of enjoying the driving.
Yeah, but let's see how that functions during Covid-19 times..... The authorities didn't take that (epidemics) into consideration, did they? Of course not. Who would've.

Bicycle anyone?

C'mon. It's cheaper. And healthier. Do your part.

Re: Driving Standards

You can call it it's democratic decision of people who live in those countries or the revenge of city dwellers, as it's more city-centric than coutry-centric. And you are way too high self-centric. No one cares about your personal costs and (at them moment) no one is forbidding you the use of cars. Don't take this so personally, I am just explaining you the reasons.
Extremely high cost of individual transport means that the cumulative costs of infrastructure and its impact is much higher than the benefits. I.e. space taken by roads and parking places is space taken away from other uses, so this effectively raises the price of land and the price of housing.
Someone up already wrote it: here the roundabouts are used primary to prevent cars going with the same speed trough residential areas. The traffic lights are often de-synchronized and intersections made so, that all the lights are simultaneously red for periods of time. When there is no car on the road lights are red and the car will have to lower the speed while approaching the intersection. A lot of effort just to interrupt the flow of traffic. There are Switzerland-wide measures that restrict building of new parking lots, including on private land. And so on.

Why are you taking it so personally? I am just explaining you (my) reasons.

Who are the 'other users' that the roads have taken space away from them? seriously?

If there are high costs of infrastructure, then even more to say use it! Don't block the roads to create fake jams and triple the CO2 emissions when you extend on purpose the duration of the red light.

In any project, the goal is to make it run smoothly. In Geneva, the project is to make the traffic NOT run smoothly.

And you keep forgetting my key point - I am oblivious to their reasoning and the mess they create. if I have to spend half an hour longer in my car, I will enjoy it.

And be COVID safe.

Millennials thinking, really.
