Re: Personal experience contracting corona?

Just had a 2hr long call with a close mate who is recovering from the virus, making 8 people I know personally. Last spoke to her the week before lockdown when the youngest of their 4 kids was ill and she's not one for social media. She had to self-isolate for 3 weeks and her doctor phoned every day to listen to her breathing and check her symptoms. He's a wonderful doctor who was my GP for 15yrs when we lived in the UK. Again, she was a borderline hospital case and had a bag packed ready because she has a heart condition, and her doctor wanted to get her tested but couldn't at the time. She's been out of isolation for a few weeks now and still feels "weird". Said it's like having a heavy weight on your chest holding you down.

On the other side, how many people would admit "yes, I have Corona NOW" to the delivery guy standing in front of them?

Nobody ever told me to be a thief and I met definitely more than 50 people in my life, therefore theft must be a lie...

I just tell the postmen and deliverymen to leave the packets on the ground either outside, or, if they insist, in the stair case. No contact, no risk.

Re: Personal experience contracting corona?

9 & 10. Mother and daughter, family friends for 50yrs. Daughter came out of ICU earlier this week. Mother (60) displayed all the symptoms. Was sent on a 40 mile round trip to get tested on Wednesday. Died Thursday morning. Dread the phone ringing now.

Apart from that I have one friend in Russia who has the exact same symptoms, went to the doctor where she was told "oh, a viral infection of the lungs, go home, take these antibiotics, and rest until it passes."

I'm no doctor, but prescribing antibiotics for a viral lung infection...
Well unfortunately as of today there is no efficient drug treatment for covid-19. But causing a collapse of the imune-system, it's a bacteria (that aren't usually a big problem to the body) that attacks the Alveoli in the lungs which cause the bacterial pneumonia source

Strange they haven't prescribed her vodka - this should kill all the viruses.

Re: Personal experience contracting corona?

Between Xmas and New Year the wife and I had a small snowboarding holiday in Laax. On the last day I began feeling unwell, and came home and had a really bad flu for a week. Normally I can operate through these things but this one knocked me on my a$$. Coughing really hurt, and I had to change the bedsheets every single morning after sweating so much at night. I haven't had a flu like that since maybe childhood, 35+ years ago, or maybe never.

Couple days later, my wife got the same thing, same symptoms arriving in same order.

We both went to the doc, who said it was simply a bad flu.

Of course, maybe it was just a normal flu, but we have wondered a few times if it was somehow related to the current virus.

Yep, OH's sister and her husband have it, they just got the test results. Heavy coughing, headaches and a bunch of other symptoms.

Living in Stockholm and forced to keep on working as a teacher it was never a question of if, but only of when.

I’ve been wondering about that too. In January, all three kids and me came down with what we thought was flu. We found it weird, as we were all vaccinated. We all had a dry cough which lasted for a long time. I guess we’ll probably never know what it was exactly.

Yikes. How do they feel about Sweden's method for dealing with the virus? Any friends I have seem to be in support of it.

Interestingly enough, this very same scenario resonates with many other stories I've heard and also personally experienced.
Common traits: Sky holidays followed by unusual and heavy flu-like symptoms for roughly a week. Interestingly enough, most people from the same household didn't get sick at the same time but seemed to have infected the next person.

My Wife is Swedish and we talked with a nice bunch of family/people. We know nobody who is in favour of the Swedish rulings and they feel like being seen as lab-rats and think Anders Tegnell is a dangerous clueless idiot.

I'd have to agree with your family/friends. In my country (US), there are a bunch of rednecks marching around with signs that say "Be more like Sweden". I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined this scenario.

It's always the flu season when people are going on ski holidays.
Flu viruses last longer on surfaces when it is cold (compared with say a beach holiday).
People generally fly to a resort and when there, quite often they are in close proximity to other people crammed into cable cars or in ski lift queues.
(and then in the bars later).

If you were to google flu + ski holidays, you'll get loads of hits from 2018 and before.

I'm not saying all these people haven't had corona-virus but getting flu or a bad cold during or after a ski holiday isn't that unusual.

Exactly.

Even when test kits and materials were still scarce and only the hospitalised cases with clear symptoms got tested (after assessment by medical doctors, as opposed to John Doe's and Jane Que's) the ratio of positive test results was only 12-15%.

Then your friends are unrepresentative of swedes as a whole who are back the plan.

If it was an experiment, it's been at least mostly successful at achieving its aims, namely I) avoiding breaking the healthcare system l, Ii) getting r below 1, iii) avoiding crashing the economy as far as is possible.

Re: Personal experience contracting corona?

My husband's best friend's mother was in a nursing home outside of Philadelphia (Chester County) and she officially died of Corona a week and a half ago. My understanding is that it is running its course through that particular nursing home - sadly.

A few days ago, the PA Government had a link on their website showing the numbers infected linked to nursing homes (it was over 2/3 of the fatalities in the county ). That link is no longer available unfortunately and I have to wonder why?

So sad as nursing home/facilities should have been locked down sooner in my view...

I think it's the also the staff that could have brought the virus there. Nursing homes, unfortunately, were among the most affected places in so many countries. The elderly are more vulnerable anyway, take into consideration they could have had a couple if not more co-morbidities and the recipe for disaster is obvious. And imho in some cases people get treatment for this corona virus while all their pre-conditions go unchecked and untreated in some cases.

That is precisely how it was for us. In addition, I think it is also the first time I have been to a doctor for a simple flu, which shows what a rough one it was.
