Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

Hello,

Can anyone offer thoughts / observations on international post and packet delivery during the last couple of months?

I would like to send some letters, big envelopes & small parcels to home addresses to mostly the US, but also the EU (Netherlands) & UK.

Any suggestions how to best send the small parcels to the US?

Any knowledge/observations on current timescales sending to US using normal Swiss post service? I've read that with less air travel, the post might be much slower.

Should I instead send small parcels to the US via a particular delivery company because perhaps they have better service via their own chartered delivery planes? Does anyone know how to make this happen in Zurich?

Any observations on sending big envelopes to the UK or the Netherlands?

Also curious if anyone has observed timescales or some current knowledge about getting post & packets in CH from the US and other countries.

Any general thoughts on what's going on with international post & package shipments during this time is greatly appreciated.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

I wasn't able to send a box (over 2kg so not a "letter" category) to one of the Schengen countries 10 days ago but could since last Monday. Post office told me that some countries allow and some don't. Take it to the post office to see if NL will allow, I really think they will take it now! US never put a ban on parcels according to my post office. Delivery times however can be longer. You have to declare the customs online, prior going to the post office, or do it at the post office with their staff and pay 3fr for this service.

Just keep in mind it will take some time. My sister sent me something from NL and it took 2 weeks.

Do I have to declare customs for NL or UK for a large envelope with soft materials inside?

I looked around for the link and can look some more .... do you have the link you used handy?

Thanks for your helpful reply above.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

under 2Kg in a small package you don't need to do a full customs clearance.

We got a commercial package delivered (online purchasing) from Belgium last week, it took about a week.

Don't know about Switzerland to the USA, but we've been getting occasional things ordered from the USA (a cd, some books, so small packages and considered 'printed material) and they took about 2 weeks to arrive... not sure about the other direction.

Personally, I would use the regular post. They very likely have priority as an essential service over the smaller courier companies... Under 2kg it goes by air. The problem at the moment is the lack of flights...

Big thanks for your comments. Really helpful.

Yes ..... I heard lack of flights was the big problem which is why I wondered what this has looked like in reality.

I prefer Swiss post but I wonder if carriers like DHL etc have their own more regular planes.

I never declared under 2kg, since it is considered a letter. But it may depend on what you are sending and where. If it is just paper, then you may not have to declare. I asked directly people at the office since they had the updated info fast here while their site did not, so I will not post links. I also checked the site of Sec. of Interior Affairs of the country I sent stuff to, since they listed the restrictions on mailing things (in their country and abroad) but that was weeks ago, when it was tough to send stuff. It is much easier now.

I don't know the details but I was shocked to see the long list of countries on the US postal site that you can no longer mail to from the US.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

I've sent a few letters and packages back-and-forth between USA and CH during the pandemic. Thus far, UPS is always on time (and always expensive), thanks to their ownership of UPS Airlines. On the other hand, priority mail and A-Post have proven to be unreliable. My stuff ends up either late or missing.

Long story short, if you want to get it done right, go with UPS, Fedex, DHL, etc.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

In recent weeks I've sent a few letters and cards to friends and family in the UK via the post. Anything that's London bound seems to still get there in about 3 days, but it's taking much longer for things to get to Scotland, anything from 7 to 10.

It's the same in the other direction, my sister took a package to her local PO in Scotland to send to us 4 days ago, she checked the tracking number today and it hasn't left the country yet.

A letter sent from CH on 16 March arrived in Chicago on 13 April, and a letter sent from Arizona on 2 April has yet to arrive in CH.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

I've been waiting for a simple letter from USA since 8 April, still not arrived. I called the sender today to get another one sent because we agreed after one month it could not be sure if lost or delayed. They happened to mention that there are huge delays even within USA with USPS and have themselves been waiting for things for over a month. Said with everyone ordering online, the system is majorly overwhelmed. So delays of over a month are apparently normal.

I can also confirm this. I sent a small packet to a friend in the UK and it got there within 4 days .... the same amount of time it took another friend in CH to receive a similar packet via economy Swiss post.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

Flights within Europe are still operating albeit infrequently. But with light passenger loads and little short-haul cargo there is plenty of room for mail.

Long-haul flights are another story. Light passenger loads but cargo is at a premium. Lots of Pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies, low weight but high density. These would take priority over mail, which isn’t high revenue.

Supply and demand rears its ugly head, yet again.

My daughter mailed us a package using "Priority Post" which was about USD 38 and typically takes 5-8 business days. Well, we are on day 9 and still no package.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

I ordered something via FedEx and DHL and it arrived from the US and Finland within 3 days. My mother sent me something from Canada, a large city, almost 4 weeks ago via regular airmail post and it has yet to arrive. It was a small box 15cmx15cmx10cm a toy for my son.

I recommend DHL or FedEx if it's really important.

Re: Letters/Parcels Timescales to US/EU/GB during Corona ??

Update - Went into a normal Swiss post office, sent a bunch of small packets. They said because of Covid I could only send using priority post to the US. People received the packets in various parts of the US, UK, Netherlands about 1 1/2 weeks later.

Hope this helps,
