Scot in lausanne feeling like giving up on la suisse

Hi,

I wasnt sure where was appropriate to post this but here goes. Iv been on exchange from uni here since last september and feel that i managed to settle quite well and may stay in lausanne for another year at least, depending on finances and studying at unil. Problem is iv had one bad thing after another happen lately and am starting to feel pretty down about being here now. Really feel in need of going out to meet more people who live near here. If anyone can give be some advice or has been in this situation before then i would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ellie

Sorry that you have had troubles in the past. From what I have seen on the forum, Lausanne area has many members and events.

The advise that has been given to others in need of some support is to attend some of the events. A couple of posts that confirm the possibilities

Good Luck

Re: Scot in lausanne feeling like giving up on la suisse

I wrote a long encouraging post and have now deleted it by mistake.
Sorry to hear that you are feeling so 'down'. Try searching in the Forums under 'lonely' or 'homesick'! At least you will know that you are not alone and you might find a hint or two about what you can do to give yourself a gentle 'kick-start' and get yourself back on track. Meeting Efers in the Lausanne region could well be a help. If you like sport at all and can get out and make yourself tired this really helps too. Some sort of '-orphins' take over.
There are loads of folk here who have been through a 'low' time after coming to Switzerland. Some event in the family which one has missed out on by being abroad is enough to trigger off a wave of homesickness. A 'low' can be caused by the frustration of trying to integrate, speaking a foreign language all the time, and still being treated as an 'alien' .
Spoil yourself a little. Do something you don't usually have time for. When I want to go out somewhere for fun, when I should really be doing housework, I remind myself of a notice a friend of mine has on her fridge - 'In this house, dust is a noun and not a verb'
Hope you soon regain your positive look on life.

Re: Scot in lausanne feeling like giving up on la suisse

Hi Ellie

Sorry to learn you're feeling so down. I've been up and down a lot over the past 8 months - far more than I ever experienced in my whole 46 years previously to arriving here (!!) although not all of my "stuff" is about living abroad.

If you want someone you can talk to, PM me and we can arrange a good time.

Hope things pick up for you soon. : )

Best wishes

Liz

Re: Scot in lausanne feeling like giving up on la suisse

Hey I'm a scot in lausanne also and only been here a few weeks ..

First weekend went out in geneva and got mugged on way back to train (though luckily we ran after them and they dropped everything).

Second weekend went out in lausanne, mate fell and hurt is elbow. Went to hospital, a porter took a dislike does us taking a photo of a deserted waiting room (which we found hilarious compared with a saturday in the uk). Anyway threw us out then called the 'special' police cos one of us didn't have ID (the polis thought it was all way out of proportion funnily enough).

Last weekend, went out in geneva lost my wallet (non-mugging related)

So all in all I could have a downer on the place but hey

Do you speak french well? Cos thats whats holding me back from joining local clubs yet. And as mentioned the english forum is a good resource for meeting folk

Hi from another Scot......unfortunately (though maybe that should be fortunately, after I hear what happens to you and others you hang about with!) I'm almost at the other side of the country or we could all meet up and have few sherries together.
You obviously forgot to bring your lucky white heather with you.
Cheers - Shona

Re: Scot in lausanne feeling like giving up on la suisse

Ellie - Yet another Jock, but living on the other side of the country... Lausanne is a big place and probably quite lonely as many cities can be (try going to London...). Have you considered getting up into the hills and having a wander about at the weekend? There are a huge number of english - and scots - speakers in Verbier for example who live there permanently and have a scene of their own. I have a few contacts there that I would be happy to introduce you to (from Perth and Aberdeen as a starter) who would certainly be up for a beer. Also a good mate living just outside Lausanne with a small child who plays rugby at the local club and would be a good source of contacts...

PM me if interested.

Hope things improve - maybe a spot of summer wouldn't go amiss either!
