| | Help! New mattress search
Hallo everyone, am looking to buy a new soft and comfortable mattress without breaking the bank. My current one is so hard i wake up super tired and achy. I have insomnia and cannot sleep most of the night, even with sleeping pills and my current mattress isn't helping that at all. Any and all suggestions are highly welcome and appreciated

I recommend a 'topper' - unless your mattress is really cheap and destroyed. We have an Ikea one... it's cheaper than buying a new mattress...maybe 150-250 chf... https://www.ikea.com/ch/de/p/tussoey...eiss-80298134/ | The following 4 users would like to thank swisspea for this useful post: | |

It is also A LOT cheaper in England. Got one once 210x160cm for about £30.00. So if OP has family there, they could send it over.
I'd start with that too, before going for a new mattress.

We ended up buying an Ikea matress. I read a few reviews on line and the matress from there did quite well. And the price difference is huge.
There is slight differences between sizes of non ikea beds and the Ikea matress. But our Piffster bed you cant tell the difference, you will just have to buy the Ikea bed sheets to fit the matress which isnt really an issue

Maybe you should have your spine checked when lying on the bed, a bad position can cause various follow-on symptoms. One possibility would be by a matress producer, eg fanello, but they're not exactly near you.
Alternatively consulting with a medical "Schlaflabor" (e.g. the one in St.Gallen's Cantonal Hospital) may be helpful.

I was thinking along the same lines. Generally a harder mattress is considered better for the back so if you're not sleeping well, I'd get your insomnia and any physiological problems sorted first.

I've struggled with insomnia on and off for the past 20 years or so. I know all too well how frustrating it is. Apparently, there are quite a few things that can cause insomnia, including low vitamin D or low B12, increased cortisol (stress hormone), or your brain not producing sufficient melatonin due to lack of sunlight or from staring at a blue screen too often in the evening. I recently bought GABA supplements to see if that will help my mind be more 'quiet' when I lay down for bed, but I haven't tried it yet. | Quote: | | | | | Yes, absolutely agree. I'd start with that too, before going for a new mattress. | | | | | I was shopping for mattress toppers online a couple months ago and found some very reasonably-priced ones on amazon.co.uk, and surprisingly, many of them offered shipping here to CH, and the shipping wasn't very expensive at all.

I have been sleeping soo much better and i did not even have to buy a new mattress. I went to get allergy testinf and got my vitamin levels tested. Turns out i have a Vitamin D defiency. Am taking supplements for it. I definitely had absolutely no idea that lack of affected my sleep since its the only thing i changed. Still wake up once or twice at night but i barely slept before so no complaints here. Thank you for the feedback!

"Personally I'd never go back to a traditional mattress."
I can't agree, about 4 years ago we were housesitting for someone and the bed had an expensive memory foam mattress. All I can say is it was like being gripped in a clam shell every night, plus it was really hot. Neither of us could move properly and we never felt well rested. OH also has a lower back problem and this type of mattress kicked it off again.
We both had neck/shoulder problems for ages, then we worked out it was caused by those square pillows favoured in Europe. I took a big suitcase back to Scotland and bought 4 British size pillows, pillow protectors and slips for them. Neck problems cleared up overnight. I could have bough British size pillows from Manor in Basel, but they were about 100 francs each and as I was already booked for Scotland it was cheaper to go Easyjet and buy pillows from Dunelm Mill
We have a really good firm IKEA mattress and Malm bedframe with 4 drawers underneath.
