What kind of vegetable plants grow in Switzerland?

I am plant illiterate, hence the question.

I live in Lausanne and I have a balcony where I want to grow some or any type of fruit that is edible. Unfortunately, I don't know what grows in this climate and any other detail I need to know. So far I have the dirt I bought from Migros and some vases.

Can anyone point me online where to buy a seed that easily grows here?

thanks

I'm not an expert but generally everything sold at local gardening centers should work, unless you live at a high altitude.

Just go to your Landi and buy what they have, it will grow. Alternatively, contact EastEnders, she is very knowledgeable.

Re: What kind of vegetable plants grow in Switzerland?

I have had good results with tomatoes, potatoes, string beans, zucchini, spring onions and all types of salad as well as herbs. Don't start with seeds, buy the small plants that have already sprouted, saves a huge hassle and time and has much better results. The secret is the soil and sun.. buy the good stuff and make sure the plants get at least 6-8 hours of sun each day.

And are not allowed to dry out, but not drowning them. The soil should feel damp to the touch. Not Wet!

In the peak of the summer heat they may need two waterings a day. But dothese in the mornings/evenings out of the direct sun.

Yeah you say this. I pointed out to my girlfriend today that the vegetable patch that we had made in the garden at great expense* doesn‘t seem to be yielding many vegetables, only to be told that she hadn‘t banked on it getting so much sun and will need plants around it to give the vegetables some shade. The weeds are pretty epic though.

*about the cost of 20 years fruit and veg.

The first mistake you are making is intending to plant them in dirt. Go back to the Migros and get some earth.

Re: What kind of vegetable plants grow in Switzerland?

OP asks about fruits, nearly everyone talks veggies.

Question to OP - do you actually want to grow fruit, i.e. peaches, strawberries, apples, cherries, etc, or do you mean vegetables like carrots, peas, green beans, etc?

Re: What kind of vegetable plants grow in Switzerland?

Raspberries and strawberries grow pretty well on a balcony. Ours were thriving until the neighbour’s cat decided it would be its private toilet, which subsequently burnt all our plants...

To be fair the thread title does say vegetables so maybe the OP doesn’t really know what he wants.🤷🏼♀️

With OP being self-proclaimed illiterate you're probably both taking OP too literally. I mean, being agnostic kind of inherently demands lots of leeway with certain terms. Perhaps see the two terms as synonymous for produce.

That said, looks like this is another poster we won't see again.

Actually anything I can eat and grows fairly easily would be awesome.

And thanks for everyone who responded.
