Working Parents - Nanny or Kita for Children?

Hi everyone,

I have a question for the working parents. We are living in Basel-Landshaft. We have 2 kids (3 and 6 y.o.) and my wife is starting to work full time like me. At the moment we are trying to arrange a care solution for the children. Would you advise finding a full time nany or sending them full day to Kita? We are still not sure which would be the best solution. (Considering the cost and convenience) The older child goes to the school half day but still we need a solution for the afternoon. And the little one is not going to the school yet.

We would be very happy to learn how you solved it.

Re: Working Parents - Nanny or Kita for Children?

1. Kita for the little one, after school (Hort) for the big one
Pros: the little one will learn to socialize, will learn German as spoken by other kids, and will probably keep some friends when going to Kindergarten (after the 4th birthday).
Cons: expect s/he'll bring lots of viruses at home, especially during winter; fixed daily schedule at Kita

2. Nanny for the little one: you can choose either Hort for the big one, or the same nanny taking care of both (but I guess you'll pay extra)
Pros: During school holidays, you already have the nanny who'll take care of both (but again, I guess you'll pay extra).

FWIW: We have 2 kids, they both go to Krippe, the eldest one will go to Kindergarten + Hort starting this summer.

Re: Working Parents - Nanny or Kita for Children?

Its very individual to you as a family and indeed to the child themselves and what works for you now may not be the solution in a couple of years time. We have 3 (each 2 years apart)

We found krippe at the beginning really really great. Our children loved it and unexpectedly it helped us integrate with the local community.

Then they started kindski and they went to hort. The hort was the same building as the krippe, I think initially the kids struggled with the diminished structure of the Hort but did ultimately enjoy it. However they struggled with homework and applying themselves so we switched at that point (when the eldest was in first class), because we then went for a nanny at home we took the youngest out of krippe. Now a nanny at home is the best option for us.

Cost wise its all the same really. We have 3 kids a nanny at home as the same as krippe/hort for the 3.
