About half a dozen people die each year in incidents involving bridge jumps.

The clear majority of the victims are males aged 18-30.
Where? In Basel? Or on the Rhine, generally?

Six per year in Basel alone would be a surprisingly high number.

Re: Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

In Switzerland.

For comparison: 40-50 people drown in a typical year. Also predominantly young men.

In the postwar years the annual death toll was in the area of 200, despite a significantly smaller population. It dropped to 60-80 by the mid-70ies, probably thanks to the introduction of mandatory swimming lessons during school.

People do things others don't understand. So?

Outrage causes adrenalin rush too - only in an arm-chair all it leads to is a boring heart attack.

Re: Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

Twenty years ago jumped from a crane arm(about 15m height) in Lower Danube(11m depth), nearly lost my toe(can't move now fully) as hit a little plastic piece from a bottle, can't see it, as it was deeper than water surface...

Re: Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

Thanks all, for your replies. I was hoping they had something like the middle lane is only for ships and for jumping, and one side lane is for swimmers , or something like that. Also, I would have had a spotter on the river bank too, to help .
I see it's against the law and I won't be jumping.
Thanks.
