Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

Greetings !!!
In Basel, Is it against the law to jump off the bridges, into the River Rhine? A few people do this, but I wanted to know if it's fine with the law. I do wanna jump !!

Re: Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

It's strictly forbidden and very stupid. I've lived in Basel almost 5 years, near both sides of the Rheinweg and have never seen anyone jump off any of the bridges.

Re: Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

I have seen idiots jump off the bridges, but you have to know where to jump and when.
Donīt jump when the river is low and at least try to hit a shipping lanewhere the river is deep, avoid the ships, be sure of a very strong undertow and notify your next of kin beforehand.
Of course if you want the extra kick you could go to Rheinfelden and jump in the Annaloch.
They may or may not find your body at some point.

Re: Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

The spot where I always did jump of the bridge when Edwin was still a teenager eventually took my lust for jumping of bridges totally away, one dude broke his neck when diving into a piece a floating wood (not at the bottom, not on the surface, just in between), another drowned since he got stuck in a dead cow.

Sure most often it goes great and is a lot of fun, but since those days I have the rules to not dive in what you can't fully oversee.

Yep, illegal.

What do they throw the balls down for before they jump? Is that supposed to warn people or are their swimming skills less than the jumping skills?

I think those might be waterproof bags that they put their dry clothes in. They balloon up a bit and can also be used as a flotation device.

Really? I'm sure there was a post here last year, with a video of someone jumping off Mittlerebrucke.

They seem to be throwing their fish-sack-swim-clothes-bag thing , not balls.

I lived directly on the Rhine in the center of Basel for years & it is a regular occurrence. However, the police have become very and rightfully strict about it. Be prepared to pay a heavy fee and/or injure yourself severely.

Still remember june 2008, Holland against Russia in Basel, the party before the match. Everyone seemed to be jumping from the bridges...

Watching those idiots jump off of Wettsteinbrucke is upsetting. I knew someone who committed suicide off that bridge. Idiots.

I suppose the purpose is to check the directions where the air flows, and also the power of the wind, as it can be different under the bridge, so they may have to adjust their jumps.

... has said, they're Wickelfische (or an alternative waterproof bag) in which clothes, a towel, and personal items are placed so they can be taken with the swimmer down the river.

(Apart from an intense hurricane, no wind under the bridge is going to affect a jump by an 80kg person!)

This here is a great example of both my overthinking and lack of Aerodynamics studies.

Hey but it sounded cool.

Actually when I began reading, I thought you were gonna write "to check which way the water flows"

Re: Basel, Jumping from bridges into the Rhine

About half a dozen people die each year in incidents involving bridge jumps.

The clear majority of the victims are males aged 18-30.
